CHIMAMANDA NGOZI ADICHIE will read from
The Thing Around Your Neck
Wednesday, July 1 at 7 PM
We are very pleased to welcome Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie,
award-winning author of Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun. Adichie has
been heralded by The Washington Post Book
World as "the 21st-century daughter of Chinua Achebe." Since the
early stages of her career, Adichie has displayed a keen awareness of the
importance of ethnicity in Nigeria, but she has also paid much attention to the
hardship often endured by Nigerian immigrants in the United States and England.
In Half of a Yellow Sun, Adichie
recreated a seminal moment in modern African history: Biafra's impassioned
struggle to establish an independent republic in Nigeria, and the chilling
violence that followed.
The Thing Around Your
Neck, Adichie's newest book, is an intimate and seamlessly crafted
collection of stories that take place in both Nigeria and America. A graceful
and compassionate storyteller who writes with fierce insight into her characters' hearts, Adichie explores the ties that bind men and women, parents and
children, Africa and the United States.
"A
meticulous observer of tactile detail and emotional nuance, Adichie moves
sure-footedly from the personal to the communal as she illuminates with
striking immediacy the consequences of prejudice, corruption, tyranny, and
violence in war-torn Nigeria and unaware America." —
