The Lion's Roar
St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Chenango Bridge, NY
May 2013
From the Rector...
Good thing you can't wear words out.
There are two words I've been saying a lot, but not enouth.  Thank you.  Can't say them enough.  My wife is done with her chemotherapy, and you have done so much to support us through this hard time: prayers, words of encouragement, notes, cards, food, hugs, and love.  Thank you.
You have always provided your rectors at St. Mark's with excellent health insurance.  You are generous.  Thank you.
I am thankful to God, too, of course.  God will keep us day by day, even if the future is not clear.  I've been saying "Thank you" to God a lot.
A wise teacher once said this: "If the only prayer you say is 'Thank you.' that would suffice."
Amen.  Can't wear that word out, either.

 Let's Plan for Fun
Our Fellowship Commission has the pleasant task of coming up with occasions for the people of St. Mark's simply to have fun together.  We are always looking for ideas.  Some of our events are for kids and adults, and others are just for grown-ups (we try to balance this out).
We meet under the leadership of Laura Chestnut, and will be getting together Sunday, May 5, at 11:30 to make plans.  Come help us out!  You'll find us in one of the Sunday school rooms.
 You Look Good in Red
Pentecost (a word meaning "Fifty") is the end of the Great Fifty Days of Easter.  It's the day our liturgy celebrates the coming of the Spirit of Christ into the life of the church.  This year, it falls on May 19.  The color of the day is red, and everyone is invited to wear red to church that day for a festive splash!
The Table Awaits You
St. Mark's Table is a potluck meal, a time for relaxed conversation, a chance to sing a little with Fr. Mark's guitar, and a worship experience of a simple Eucharist around the table.  Join us on Tuesday, May 21, for the Table.  We all bring our own place settings and food to share for the supper.  The event begins at 6:00 p.m. and ends about 7:30.
Come Help Spruce Up the Church Grounds
On Saturday, May 11, we would like to have some volunteers come help clean up the church grounds and gardens.  We will meet at 9:30 a.m.   Bring your rakes, pruning shears, hedge clippers - whatever you might use to clean up your own yards.  Remember - many hands make for fast work!
Youth Group Will Be Honored May 2
The annual breakfast honoring volunteers working for programs under the leadership of the Broome County Council of Churches is Thursday, May 2, at the Riverwalk Hotel.  One of the honorees this year is the youth group of St. Mark's.  Since the start of the Ramp It Up program (building wheelchair ramps for needy county residents), our youth group has been building ramps each summer.  One of our young builders, Dan Gridley, will be speaking.  He will represent all the dozens of St. Mark's teens who have participated over the years.  Three cheers for our young people, and the adults who have so faithfully guided them!
Time to Pick Up Our Adopted Highway
Twice a year, the people of St. Mark's pick up trash along Route 12A from the bridge to Route 12 itself.  Perhaps you've seen the St. Mark's Adopt-a-Highway sign?  On Saturday, May 4, please come to the mini-golf parking lot on route 12A, across from Chenango Bridge medical, at 9:00 a.m. to help out.  Safety gear will be provided.  It usually takes only an hour or so, and is a nice contribution to our community.
 Easter Day Was a Joy
The schedule of services on Easter Day this year was an experiment.  In recent years, due to the compact size of our building and our growing membership, it has been difficult to fit people into the sanctuary for our 8:00 and 10:00 services.  So the Rector decided to add a third service to see if it would serve us better, since it has worked for our Christmas schedule.
It did!  Our services were at 7:30, 9:00 and 11:00 on Easter Day, and each service was full without being overcrowded.  And each service was a festive celebration of our Lord's resurrection!
Special thanks to Dan Gridley for playing guitar along with the Rector for the 9:00 service.  Special thanks to the chime choir for their beautiful contributions to the 11:00 service.  And special thanks to Cindi Ferranti and the adult choir for their musical leadership of the 11:00 service.
The experiment was a success, and will be a new tradition for scheduling our Easter services!
Youth Group at Church All Night Long
Time for the always-popular youth group lock-in at church!  Eric and Sabrina Laine, along with Father Mark, invite the youth in grades 7 - 12 to come to church for an overnight on Friday, May 31.
Th event begins at 7:00 p.m. and ends the next morning by 8:30 (some teens have to leave earlier for work or sports).  We ask the youth to bring a sleeping bag and pillow, toiletries, a snack to share, and a readiness to have a good time.  "Sardines" will be part of the night, of course!
St. Mark's Story Collecting, Anyone?
Our parish has been around for about 60 years.  We are fortunate to have a fascinating parish history notebook, put together by wonderful historians: the late, great Dot Johnson, and her friend Ann Dohanich.  The document ends with the year 2003.  That means we have almost ten years to catch up on while people can still remember the stories!  The St. Mark's history project is fun, because, unlike many parish histories, it is not only about the clergy and the building; it tells the "real people stories" of our church.
Father Mark is asking if there is a person or persons who would like to take on the job of bringing this treasured document up to date.  Speak to him if you can, and he can help direct this work.
The Bishop Came, Conversed, and Confirmed
Bishop Skip Adams spent the day with us on April 7, the Second Sunday of Easter.  He preached and presided at both 8:00 and 10:00, including the baptism of Arabella Laine at the early service.  It is a great pleasure when he visits us.
And then he presided at the District Confirmation service we hosted that afternoon.  We were blessed to present these people to him for Confirmation: Mary-Emma McRae, Sandy Zanker-Nichols, Gary Henderson, and Kate Henderson.  And we were blessed to present these people to him for reception from another Communion: Patricia Henderson, Bill Henderson, and Mike Henderson.
We congratulate these people for making an adult commitment to their baptismal vows as they publicly affirmed their membership in the Episcopal Church.  We truly are blessed to have them as part of our church family!  And we are blessed to have a good friend in our Bishop Skip!
St. Mark's at Trinity Canteen May 28
Though it's a holiday weekend (Memorial Day), hunger does not take the day off.  Can you sign up for our monthly team to feed the hungry on that Sunday?  Unfortunately, attendance is growing at this hot meal program for the needy in downtown Binghamton.
Each month on the fourth Sunday, St. Mark's members bring food and prepare a meal at our sister parish in downtown Binghamton.  The meal is served at noon (and is cleaned up by 1:30 at the latest), and the volunteers arrive by 11:00 to get it ready.
If you've never participated, now is the time!  St. Mark's likes to feed people.  Please sign up on the bulletin board; you'll get a phone call several days before the event to let you know what to do.
Education for Ministry - Trial Session
Monday, May 20, 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
"Will you promise to seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?"  This is a promise we have made as baptized Christians but sometimes it is hard to know just what our call to serve is.  Education for Ministry is a program that assists individuals in discerning that call.  It might be something as simple as a friendly telephone call to someone who is homebound or as complex as starting a vegetable garden to benefit CHOW clients.  EfM is a four year program (sign up for one year at a time) which meets on Monday evenings from September through May.  On Monday, May 20, the current seminar group is hosting a free "trial seminar" session to give those interested a chance to experience the program before committing to a full year.  If you would like to attend or have any questions about it, please contact either Dolly Chergosky at 785-8546 ( or Jennifer Westerman at 754-3971 (
