PRESS INVITE: Woolworths "shareholder-activists" press conference on Sunday 29 November in Cape Town
In lieu of the upcoming Woolworths AGM (taking place at Woolworths head office on Monday 30 November), "shareholder-activists” including priests, youth leaders, trade unionists and others will be holding a press conference to address the media tomorrow (Sunday, 29 November) at 1pm in Cape Town:
Woolworths Shareholder-Activists Press Conference
DAY: Sunday, 29 November
TIME: 13h30pm
VENUE: 6 Spin Street, Cape Town CBD
The press conference will explain the reason for the shareholder-activists attending the upcoming Woolworths AGM, what sort of questions will be asked and what actions will be undertaken during and at the AGM.
Activists belonging to the National Coalition 4 Palestine and the #BoycottWoolworths campaign, have bought single shares in Woolworths Holdings Limited in order to attend the company’s AGM and raise issues regarding, amongst others, the company's trade with Israel. In addition several long-time bussiness-people shareholders with investments of over 1 million each have also donated their proxies to activists in order to attend the upcoming Woolworths AGM.
The attending of a company’s AGM to push certain human rights agendas by “shareholder-activists” is a practice inspired by the anti-apartheid movement where priests, trade unions and others would attend the AGMs of multinational companies that were trading with Apartheid South Africa. In the 1980s shareholder-activists would raise the boycott of Apartheid South Africa as well as, in some instances, collapse the company's AGMs. Click here for a Business Day article from last year's 2014 Woolworths AGM that BDS #BoycottWoolworths activists had attended.
