Hello Firstname

Wednesday 5 September
Next Wednesday is another of those evenings not to miss, the annual chance to see what our Chairman has been up to, when he presents the Chairman's Evening. Jeff has let me have a few words to let you know what to expect:

The Continuing Journey - We will be looking at HDR both in camera & multi shot style. There will be two sections on flowers. In the second half will be looking at recent work from China & Slovenia - also, of course, we couldn't get away without a short Sport section.

Here are a few shots to whet your appetite

2018-2019 BPS Handbook
The new 2018-2019 BPS Handbook is now available. Copies will be on the computer desk at the rear of the main meeting room, please take your copy and tick your name off on the list provided.

You will notice a few changes from the 2017-2019 Book, the main ones are:
Page 3 - Subscription rates
Page 4 - Various Council of Management changes
  • Secretary - following the resignation of John Hudson earlier in the year, the post of Secretary has now been taken on by Nick Ball. The role Nick will be taking on is slightly different to previous years, in that he will be responsible for the legal/official tasks usually associated with a Company Secretary. The Task of minuting the Council meetings, previously done by the Secretary will now be done by Carol Sykes.
  • Photography Course - this shows Jeff Hargreaves as "Acting" co-ordinator, we are actively looking for someone to take this job on a more permanent basis.
  • Clubroom Steward - After more years than most members care to remember, Gill Peeke has stood down as Clubroom Steward. Vicky Harrison has kindly (or is it bravely?) stepped into the breach, for which we offer our thanks. Vicky is welcomed onto the Council.
Page 22 et seq - Competition Rules. Some of these have changed:
  • Page 23 - Nature images should now conform to the PAGB guidelines.
  • Page 24 - Prescribed categories.
  • Page 26 - Competitions - Rules for Entrants, paragraph 3 - Image sizes

2018-2019 Competitions
Please note, there are two competition closing dates in September. To help you with your entries for the forthcoming year, please follow this link to see the latest rules, in particular the size changes for DPIs and the subjects for the prescribed categories in the various rounds of the Monthly Competitions.

5 September - Projected Image Competition Round 1 - Judge: Brian Swinyard MA (photo) ARPS DPAGB EFIAP/b. Don't forget, the revised/updated size requirement - IMAGES SHOULD BE 1600 X 1200 PIXELS - this is to suit the new projector.

26 September - Print Competition Round 1 - Judge: Ed Cloutman EFIAP
For the advanced level only, the competitions will be subdivided into an ‘open’ category and a ‘prescribed’ category. In each round, two submitted images can be in the 'open' category, the subject and style being the free choice of the entrant. The third image submitted must be in the subject or style category specified for each competition. The Projected Image Competition subject is "Letters" and for the Print Competition the subject is "Wood".

Club Outing to Arnos Vale Cemetery
Last Wednesday evening, 30+ club members met at Arnos Vale Cemetery for the annual BPS outing. We met at 7pm and very soon we had broken up into small groups and dispersed to all corners of this vast place. Time will tell if any successful images were captured, but the shots below do show a few of our members actually pointing cameras at things!

Beyond The Wall - Dates For Your diary
Here is some advanced notice of a couple of future events being organised by David Grierson at Beyond the Wall.

The next meeting of the group will take place on Monday 17th September. It will be the You Tube video night based on improving Black and White images.
Before then, a great opportunity to take some cycling photos as the Tour of Britain race has its 3rd stage based in and around Bristol.
If you would like to meet up on Tuesday 4th September, the stage starts @ 11.30am on the Downs but my early thoughts are to be on Beggar Bush Lane in Failand where the riders get released from the controlled start and get racing. Then just before the finish about 2.30pm, the riders have to come up Rownham Hill and over the Suspension Bridge. If you would like to meet up, please let me know.  mail@dgrierson.co.uk

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
