Tech Corner  tech

Each month we will explore a different aspect of technology that can help you in your classroom.  This month it’s Kahoot Kahoot is a game based classroom response system.  First step, create your free account and then make a quiz, survey or discussion.  Students log on to kahoot.it on their smart phones or iPads and answer the questions.  The teacher then displays the question and students choose from the multiple choice responses given.  Students get points for responding correctly in the allotted time.  The correct answer is then displayed and the top scoring students names are shown.

YouTube Clip of the Month

This month it’s not YouTube, but NBC News.  Muertoon is an animated program from children’s authors Eric Gonzalez and Erich Haeger and is based on their popular books Rosita y Conchita.

thanksgiving

Looking to incorporate Thanksgiving into your classroom this month? Here are some great ideas.

Make hand silhouette turkeys to review verbs.  Use the body of the turkey to write the verb and the feathers for the forms.

Le Thanksgiving – Histoire et Origines Video explains everything about Thanksgiving.  Use for more advanced French students for vocabulary.

A Bilingual Song about Thanksgiving in Spanish and English.

Choose any color by number sheet, but change the numbers to work problems in the target language.

Spanish Playground has downloadable vocabulary pages and coloring pages.

Use student plans for vacation to do a paired activity or “find someone who.”

Create a paper turkey and have student write what they are thankful for on each feather.

Review grammar points by having students respond to these prompts:
If I had a pet turkey…
A long time ago the Pilgrims life was like…
Would you rather (and give many Thanksgiving related activities)

Dear Poly,
I’m trying to get my students to take more ownership of what they are doing and to have a better gauge of their performance.  I want them to know that they are improving and for them to feel confident that they can speak.  I’m trying to move away from only grammar-based activities and to a more communicative based classroom.  How can I get students to see what they can do?

Grammar Hooked in La Quinta

Dear Grammar-
If you’re trying to go from what they learned to what they “can do,” you should look at the ACTFL “Can-Do Statements.”  These are self-assessment check-lists for students broken down by Interpersonal Communication, Presentational Speaking and Writing, and Interpretive Listening and Reading.  You can use them for students as pre-post self-assessments and use them to plan lessons and units.

Poly

Dear Poly,

When I started the teaching year, I had all these great ideas and strategies for teaching.  But now that November is here, all of my great ideas and strategies are old, worn, and boring.  I look out at my students and their faces are drooping and they are B O R E D!!  What can I do?  Where can I get help?

Frustrated in Fontana

Dear Frustrated,
I have just the thing for you.  The IE STARS training is what you need.  The presenters are among the best in the state, and they have three different strands to choose from: 1A Engaging and Motivating Strategies that address California Standards and Common Core Standards, 1B TPRS - Using stories to build proficiency, 2 Strategies for teaching advanced students, Spanish speakers, and AP.  Each strand gives you great new ideas and activities that are classroom tested, easy to implement, and ready for you to use on Monday.  Teachers who have taken this training are raving about all that it has done for them making there job easier and more effective.  They meet on one Saturday per month at CSUSB.

Be good to yourself, make your life easier, and your teaching more effective.
