Wednesday 15 February

Next Wednesday we welcome Bill Ward to BPS, when he will present his talk:  In Search Of ........

Multi award winning Bristol-based photographer and actor Bill Ward gives a very personal insight into his unique photographic journey. He'll discuss his background, and his acting career, before going on to discuss the photographs that he takes and why he takes them.
He'll cover the full range of his work, from his contemporary seascapes, landscapes and cityscapes to his distinctive "Creative Photography" projects (ICM, In-camera Multiple Exposures, and Abstract) - a genre in which he's been a leading practitioner for over a decade. Expect plenty of unexpected twists and turns, and an awful lot of pictures.

Bill’s website is: www.billwardphotography.co.uk

Below is a selection of images from the talk:
Some members (most likely the ladies) might recognise Bill, as he is probably best known for playing the badly behaved builder Charlie Stubbs in the UK TV show Coronation Street, a role he played for over 400 episodes and three and a half years, and for which he won numerous awards. He also played the long-suffering farmer James Barton in Emmerdale, also for more than 3 years and 300 episodes, and for which he was also nominated for a number of awards. Recent TV work includes After Life for Netflix, The Hunt for Raoul Moat for ITV, and Before We Die for Channel 4/Worldwide. He recently finished performing the brand new British musical “Are You As Nervous As I Am” at the Greenwich Theatre, London.

DI Group
DI (Zoom) Meeting – Monday 13 February, 7.30 pm

As usual there were wonderful presentations last month starting with Tim Barker showing his landscapes and nature images followed by macro images by Ann. Her close-up work is among the best quality but this time it was of an unusual subject – slugs, or more precisely their private lives. Their mating habits were revealed in graphic details not just in scientific but an artistic way. Ann’s success in macro work is achieved mainly by an in-depth knowledge of her subject. Derwood presented his portraits of figures delicately posed in studios and also this time unusually underwater. He also showed his creative dance images for which he has been achieving a lot of success not only in club competitions but also recent acceptance in the RWA Exhibition. The intrepid traveller John Hudson was in Egypt last month exploring the amazing Temples of Abu Simbel and the tomb of Nefertari. They are just awe inspiring. Sue Swift showed a whole range of images she had shortlisted for the last competition on the prescribed subject ‘Bridges’, some of them in a creative style.

All BPS members are welcome to join in the next DI meeting especially if you have images to share. If, like Sue, you have been going through your images for competitions or salons and you want to get an opinion on your images or just show what you have been working on you are most welcome to present them. You may also join in if you just want to see the proceedings or ask questions on digital imaging from fellow members.

I look forward to receiving your images for presentation at the next DI meeting. Please send me your images to reach me by 6pm-ish on Sunday 12 February. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). If you wish to show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox if convenient, but I am not equipped to receive by direct transfers from Google or Apple Mac systems.

As mentioned by Ralph on Wednesday, there are just three rules that apply to viewing the judging:
1.    Keep quiet.
2.    Stay silent.
3.    Don’t make any noise.

WCPF DPIC & Interclub Print Competition
Both competitions were held at the Corn Exchange on Sunday. Despite the scoring being a little on the harsh side, I’m pleased to say that we came out the other side with two fantastic results – FIRST in the Prints and SECOND in the Digital Images (Dorchester, taking 2nd and 1st in a reversal of or positions.

Pleased to say this means we now qualify for both the PAGB Digital and Print competitions in Warwick and Blackburn respectively, later this year.

And, given the excellent overall position, it will come as no surprise that we picked you Best Overall Print, Best Nature Print and a selection of HCs. Individual awards will be awarded at the WCPF Members Exhibition on 11 March at Bovey Tracey.

Amateur Photographer - APOY 2023
Amateur Photographer of the Year (APOY)
Following on from the successes above, let’s build on this and try and take the APOY Club award (and cash) from Launceston CC. You may recall in 2021, Mike Martin came fourth overall, and projected BPS to second place in the club ranking, behind the combined efforts of 11 photographers from Launceston. Competition in 2022 was stiffer but we still managed 6th place overall, following the efforts of Steve Field, Colin Dixon and Mike.

If more members participate, we should be well placed to do well. So, PLEASE join in.

About APOY.
  • Comprised 10 rounds on different topics.
  • Subscribers receive one free entry per month (expert tip:  if you use the free Libby App and register with your library on-line, you can read the magazine absolutely free AND pick up the Free Entry Code published in the magazine without paying a penny!!!).
  • If you want to boost your chances, you can buy blocks of additional entries, up to four per competition.
  • Winners in each round win MPB vouchers and receive points towards their individual ranking AND their Club Ranking (PROVIDED you have associated yourself with BPS during the initial registration process).
  • Entries are made on-line (expert tip:  Enter high resolution JPGs – the winning images are used to grace the pages of the magazine each month in the winners gallery. They assume that the submitted image is the highest resolution available, and since they need images that are good enough/large enough to print, there is a risk that photos that are judged less favourably).
More details can be found on Photocrowd where the competition is hosted, or ask Mike or Steve

Things To See
I am grateful to club members Mark Gilbert and Sian Jones for the following:

Mark Gilbert
There were a couple of items on BBC programmes at the weekend that may be of interest:

On Click (BBC News Channel at the weekend) they discussed old digital cameras. The programme is here:

and the item starts just after 20 minutes into the programme.

On the Travel Show (BBC News Channel at the weekend) the first item in the programme was about Benin Bronzes from Nigeria, and they spoke about the process of casting bronzes, which would be of interest to those who visited Steve Russell Studios and Pangolin Editions a couple of Saturdays ago:
