Dear Friends,

Haneen Zoabi is a member of the Israeli Knesset (parliament) and will be speaking at several AMEC events this week, below find her speaking schedule.

Zoabi is a leading voice for the rights of Palestinians in Israel who are subjected to a myriad of discriminatory policies and practices. She has previously called Israel ‘inherently racist’ and has challenged the very notion of it being a democracy. In 2010 she participated in the 'Freedom Flotilla' on board the Mavi Marmara ship which was attacked by Israeli Defense Force (IDF) commandos and resulted in the killing of 9 humanitarian workers by the IDF. More recently, she participated in the Russell Tribunal on Palestine in Cape Town, click here to watch Haneen Zoabi giving testimony at the tribunal on Israel's apartheid policies.

Ms. Zoabi is under increasing attack for her outspoken position. After her address at the Russell Tribunal, Israeli Knesset Members undertook parliamentary efforts to revoke her citizenship. However, human rights advocates, activists and politicians worldwide have come to Zoabi's defense. In November 2011, the General Secretary of COSATU, Zwelinzima Vavi, made this public intervention in support of Haneen Zoabi: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZViHUmbUMQc&context=C4543780ADvjVQa1PpcFNELbGo1BdRziNjKaUTi8jFCfmdfu15VfU=
