The AGM looms ever closer, 5 July, and the Membership Secretary needs to update her file containing members' distinctions for the annual report. Can you please check the distinctions shown at the head of this newsletter, if they are wrong, can you please let Carol know at membership@bristolphoto.org.uk |
The Photoshop course, organised by Lee Spencer-Fleet has now finished and below is a short report from Lee on its success.
DIGITAL IMAGING COURSES – UPDATE
It has been a pleasure running a ‘Photoshop for Photographers (Beginners)’ course at the BPS club rooms. The course completed successfully last week in the run up to the Easter holidays with 12 students (all BPS members) in attendance. I have already thanked the BPS Committee for the opportunity to run this pilot course and I do appreciate all the interest and offers of help received.
Here are a few of the feedback comments from the students:
‘‘I just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed the course. The time flew by and it is a shame it is over now. Hopefully you will do some more and I look forward to any. One of the things I thought was nice was the group feeling - working with other people in the club together. That is something that would be nice to carry on’’.
‘‘Excellent value and content – Well paced and we learned a lot.’’
You might like to see how we fitted 12 students with laptops (and a few desktop computers) neatly into the gallery space at the rear of the club rooms. This meant only a step or two to travel for the coffee and biscuits ! Having said that – You can see from the look of concentration that it was difficult to get students to break away from their computers.
Here’s hoping that our vibrant photographic community down at BPS will foster more learning opportunities. Please contact me with any suggestions or requests for courses or shorter workshops and look out for more updates. (BPS members who have enquired already about a re-run of the Photoshop Beginners will be contacted shortly).
Please email your enquiries and suggestions to lee@digitaldreamdesigns.uk

Would members please remember that mobile phones should be switched to silent during meetings (or preferably switched off) and that texting, checking messages or otherwise playing with your phone should be resisted, especially during projected image evenings - the brightly lit phone screens can be very distracting and annoying to those nearby.

BPS members are invited to the next meeting of Bristol Film and Video Society on Tuesday 18 April, 7.30pm (Venue see http://www.bristolvideo.org.uk/find.html) LIGHTING THE DIFFICULT
- How do you light a whole room?
- What if the room is in darkness?
- What if an actor walks through the room with a candle or torch.
You will be advised by professional cinematographer Richard Harris. Often textbooks tell us about static lighting – three-point etc. but we make movies where things on view move and the camera often moves. How do you keep a moving actor lit and with no difficult shadows? It gets worse when the prime source of light is being carried by the actor; for example a torch. What if it is a candle? Does the candle itself provide the light? If not, what do you do How do you light a whole room? What if the room is in darkness? What if an actor walks through the room with a candle or torch. Richard Harris is bringing professional kit and his own team of assistants. A lot of effort is being put into this presentation so please do not miss it. If you have a friend interested in video or still photography then bring them as a guest. |

ITS NOT PARTICULARLY EASY FINDING "DATES FOR YOUR DIARY", SO I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF MEMBERS COULD LET ME KNOW OF ANY EVENTS, EXHIBITIONS OR PICTURE LOCATIONS THAT THEY THINK WOULD BE OF INTEREST. DATES AND WEB LINKS WOULD HELP.

We have received the folowinlg from Somerset Speedway at Highbridge. If you want to organise an evening, you will need to sort out a group (min 10) and contact the speedway organisers directly:
Are You Looking For A Different Night Out?........... ………Why not try a Photos and Food night at Somerset Speedway. Come and photograph Motorsport in the raw, and enjoy some hospitality at the same time.
Last year we had visits from several Camera Clubs and Photographic Societies, notably Bridgwater Photographic Society, Bristol Photographic Society, Dorchester Camera Club and Lyme Bay Photo Club. Already this year we have had a highly successful visit from Wellington & District Camera Club, and from the feedback I received from those organisations, a great evening was had by all. Don’t take my word for it, try it for yourself, or even contact those clubs and ask what kind of evening they had.
What’s On Offer and How Does It Work?.......
……….We can offer you a table in our Clubhouse, exclusively for the use of your group. Your table will give you access to the VIP & sponsors area, if you wish, and we will also provide you with a buffet of cold meats, salads, wedges, or chips. In addition, we will take you on a pre-meeting tour of the pits and track, and explain about the sport, which is one of the most exciting motorsports around, with machines that will out accelerate a Formula 1 car from a standing start to 60mph. On top of that they have no brakes, and no gears, and race on an enclosed circuit, made up of loose shale, and all on a motorbike that only weighs around 70kgs, and produces over 70bph, and often race just inches from the safety fence, whilst neck and neck with an opponent.
You don’t need to stay in the guest area, you are free to wander the public areas, and take photographs of the action (subject to some safety rules etc). There are numerous great viewpoints around the arena all of which will provide you the opportunity to capture some stunning images. All we ask is that you consider the enjoyment of the other supporters whilst doing so.
What Does It Cost and What Do You Get?.......
Having moved up to the top flight of British Speedway, a reduced number of fixtures, and increased cost has necessitated an increase on last year’s prices……..The basic cost for the 2017 season, will be as follows. For 10+ Persons (Minimum number at this price) the cost is £17.00 per head, which represents great value, when you consider the normal cost of an Adult admission is £16.00 per head (without food). For numbers under 10 persons, please apply for costings. For this price your party will enjoy the following:
• Table(s) for the exclusive use of your party • Access to the VIP & sponsors area • Buffet • Pre-meeting tour of the Pits and Track (**subject to available time) • Please note drinks are not included, but can be purchased separately from the clubhouse bar
** Pits open to public between 6:00pm and 7:00pm
How Do You Book?......
……….For available dates (and the good light), just contact me on the number below, or email on this or the club marketing email address. Whilst we can accommodate more than one group on any evening, dates will be allocated on a ‘First Come, First served’ basis, so avoid missing out and book early.
I hope to hear from you soon. If you have any questions, or require any further information, please don’t hesitate to call (number below), or email me, and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
Kind Regards, Dave Thompson,
Somerset Speedway, Marketing & Commercial,

Although Greg Duncan is not normally a print worker, in the recent Great British Small Print Circuit he obtained 36 acceptances, including an HM and a Gold medal - he'll have to go, I'm getting bored with having to continually type his name!
|
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers
of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't
include them all. So please only advise of awards or other
milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
