Important Message From The Chairman
|
The following is an announcement from Neil McCoubrey
My wife and I had long planned to move back to Scotland once the kids left home. We hadn't imagined it would happen quite so soon but family matters mean we have decided we need to go this summer rather than later. So, I will have to step down as Chairman of BPS, but thankfully Millie is both willing and able to take over. Thanks to Millie and thanks to you all for your support and encouragement, photographic and otherwise. BPS is an excellent photographic society and I have been proud to be part of it.
Despite my move to Scotland, I will remain a BPS member. Every 6-8 weeks I will be back in Bristol for a few days and I look forward to attending future meetings and entering the DPI competitions. I will then be sitting "Beyond the Wall" again!
Now to practical matters. My leaving and Millie's move to Chairman will leave a big hole in the running of the annual Photography Course. The course raises £6000 a year for BPS which is equivalent to a £50 subsidy to each and every member. So it is a valuable resource and BPS urgently needs help to take over its operations. As the course runs for 11 consecutive Tuesdays plus 3 Saturdays from September each year it would be a very big commitment for just one person. However Millie and I have found it works well as a "job-share". By the way, this role is wholly organisational and logistical rather than photographic. So are there 1 or 2 BPS members out there willing to take on this responsibility?
New for this year, the course also requires 3 or 4 tutors to lead groups in practical Photoshop Elements training. There would be roughly 30 students in groups of 5 to be trained over 2 nights (3 groups per night). Obviously reasonable experience of Photoshop Elements (or CS - they are very similar) is required. Is anyone up for this?
Finally, the Photographic Course would welcome more volunteers to help run the weekly tutor groups and help out on the 3 Field trips.
Thanks
Neil
If you would like more information about the photography course, please see Millie at any Wednesday meeting or email her at photocourse@bristolphoto.org.uk; she will be only too pleased to let you know what is involved.

SOCIETY OF BIOLOGY’S AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION LAUNCHED
Exhibition of previous shortlisted entries on display at the Royal Institution of Great Britain
Every year the Society of Biology runs an amateur photography competition for inspiring images which explore biology and the natural world. The theme for this year’s competition is ‘Home, habitat and shelter’ and entries will be accepted for the two categories – adult and under 18 – until 31st July.
This will be the 4th year that the competition has run, and the Society hopes that this year’s theme – Home, habitat and shelter – will encourage people to think creatively about the unique ways animals, plants and organisms exploit their environment in order to survive. Photographs could focus on biological research – exploring why and how organisms survive in different environments. Or it could simply capture the beauty of an animal in its natural environment: a lion prowling the savannah or an orca whale content within the coastal waters of the Atlantic Ocean. There are two categories for entering, each with a cash prize:
Photographer of the Year (over 18) – top prize £1,000
Young Photographer of the Year (under 18) – top prize £500
The 2014 competition is sponsored by life science company Eppendorf. Judging for the competition will take place in September and the winners will be announced at the Society’s annual award ceremony in October during Biology Week 2014.
