IMAGINARY TENTOONSTELLING VAN START GEGAAN
|
Op 2 juni werd de tentoonstelling ‘’Imaginary: pracht en kracht van wiskunde’’ officieel geopend in Leiden (European City of Science 2022), door burgemeester Lenferink. Een groep van zo’n 50 genodigden woonde deze opening bij. De tentoonstelling is in Leiden, in de Oude Universiteitsbibliotheek, gratis te bezoeken tot en met 25 juli. In september volgt Nijmegen, in oktober Utrecht. Op de website www.imagniarymaths.nl is alle informatie te vinden, evenals een voorproefje van de zeer aantrekkelijke en prachtige catalogus, te koop voor 5 Euro.

WORKSHOP AI AND MATHEMATICS – CONNECTING THE MATHS CLUSTERS
|
Op 9 en 10 juni vond de eerste workshop van het AI & Mathematics initiatief (AIM) bij het CWI plaats, mede georganiseerd door vertegenwoordigers van alle 4 wiskundeclusters en NWO. Het doel van de workshop was om onderzoekers op het gebied van wiskundige AI bijeen te brengen en wiskunde als sleuteltechnologie in het AI-onderzoek onder de aandacht te brengen. Meer dan 100 geïnteresseerde wetenschappers namen deel aan deze leuke workshop met interessante lezingen (o.a. van Spinoza laureaat Ieke Moerdijk), een strategiesessie en een gezellig diner. Wij zijn blij met dit succes en kijken uit naar de volgende evenementen van AIM.

AINED – NATIONAAL GROEIFONDS
|
Tijdens de workshop van AIM (zie boven) hield Inald Lagendijk een korte voordracht over AiNed. Het programma bevordert de ontwikkeling en toepassing van AI bij het Nederlandse bedrijfsleven en overheden. Het publiek-privaat meerjarenprogramma AiNed brengt Nederland in de kopgroep van AI-landen en levert een grote bijdrage aan de internationale concurrentiepositie.
Op https://ained.nl/vooraankondiging-call-ained-fellowship-grant/ is een vooraankondiging te vinden met betrekking tot een fellowship grant. Het doel van de Fellowship grants is Nederlandse academische kennisinstellingen aantrekkelijker te maken voor bijzondere en excellente AI-onderzoekers in de internationale strijd om talent. Dit geldt zowel voor het aantrekken van nieuw talent, als voor het behouden van talentvolle onderzoekers die concurrerende internationale aanbiedingen krijgen. Deze call wordt van harte aanbevolen aan de Nederlandse wiskundegemeenschap.

VOORLICHTING OMTRENT ERC EN MSCA GRANTS
|
De commissie Onderzoek van PWN heeft op 24 maart en 16 juni voorlichtingsbijeenkomsten gehouden, online, over de ins en outs van aanvragen in het kader van ERC en MSCA. De bijeenkomsten werden verzorgd door Yellow Research in Amsterdam. De sessies zijn opgenomen, en kunnen opnieuw worden bekeken via links welke te vinden zijn op https://platformwiskunde.nl/onderzoeksaanvragen/

VAKANTIECURSUS VOOR LERAREN WISKUNDE 2022
|
De vakantiecursus voor leraren Wiskunde 2022 zal plaatsvinden in Amsterdam, op het CWI, op 26 en 27 augustus. In Eindhoven zal de cursus plaatsvinden op 2 en 3 september, in het gebouw van het Academisch Genootschap.
Het thema is: “Willekeur en structuur in netwerken’’. Hoofddocente is Nelly Litvak (Universiteit Twente. Tevens zullen Clara Stegehuis (UT) en Pim van der Hoorn (TU/e) een voordracht houden.
U kunt zich opgeven middels het aanmeldformulier op www.platformwiskunde.nl/vakantiecursus/. Hier kunt u ook de flyer downloaden met alle informatie. Vanzelfsprekend zijn uw collega’s ook van harte welkom, dus attendeer hen vooral ook op deze cursus.

CONSTANCE VAN EEDEN PhD FELLOWSHIP
|
Om de werving van vrouwelijke promovendi te stimuleren en aandacht te vragen voor de positie van vrouwen in de wetenschap, lanceert Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) de Constance van Eeden PhD Fellowship. De fellowship biedt een PhD-positie aan een getalenteerde vrouwelijke studente in de wiskunde, informatica of een aanverwant vakgebied. De PhD Fellowship is vernoemd naar Constance van Eeden (1927-2021), die van 1954 tot 1960 bij het CWI werkte en een van de eerste vrouwelijke promovendi in de statistiek in Nederland was.
Het aantal vrouwelijke onderzoekers in de wiskunde, informatica en aanverwante wetenschapsgebieden loopt al jaren achter. Het CWI wil dit probleem aanpakken en hierover bewustzijn creëren met de lancering van de Constance van Eeden Fellowship, gericht op getalenteerde vrouwelijke onderzoekers die een carrière in de wetenschap nastreven. CWI had 20% vrouwelijke onderzoekersin 2021. Het CWI streeft echter naar 30% (of meer) vrouwelijke onderzoekers. Angelique Schilder, hoofd HR en coördinator Gender Diversiteit zegt hierover het volgende: “Om een toename van het aantal vrouwelijke onderzoekers in ons instituut te realiseren, moet er iets veranderen en we hopen dat deze Fellowship daar een bijdrage aan zal leveren.”

OPROEP: COMITE VAKANTIECURSUS
|
De vakantiecursus voor wiskundeleraren bestaat al sinds 1946, en werd tot 2010 georganiseerd door het Mathematisch Centrum, tegenwoordig het Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica. Vanaf 2010 organiseert Platform Wiskunde Nederland de vakantiecursus, en hiervoor hebben we een comité dat geschikte onderwerpen bedenkt, sprekers zoekt en vraagt, brochure en syllabus verzorgt en als gastheer optreedt tijdens de vakantiecursus, welke steeds in twee opeenvolgende weekenden rond eind augustus plaatsvindt in Amsterdam en Eindhoven.
GEZOCHT: we zijn op zoek naar (jonge) onderzoekers, die het comité voor de vakantiecursus willen komen versterken. De benodigde tijd valt reuze mee, in oktober vindt er een vergadering plaats op het CWI om te spreken over een nieuw onderwerp en hoofdspreker. Hierop volgende communicatie vindt voornamelijk per e-mail plaats. Meestal zijn de leden van het comité één van de twee weekenden waarin de vakantiecursus plaatsvindt aanwezig.

SUCCESFORMULES – NU VIER VIDEO’S ONLINE
|
Vaak wordt de vraag gesteld door leerlingen vmbo/havo/vwo waar de wiskunde die zij leren toe dient. Het is dan belangrijk dat docenten wiskunde vmbo/havo/vwo bronnenmateriaal hebben om toepassingen van wiskunde in beroepen te laten zien. Letterlijk wiskunde in beeld.
Vanuit het Platform Wiskunde Nederland wordt gestimuleerd dat hier goed materiaal voor beschikbaar is, en zijn inmiddels vier video's beschikbaar:
- Lineair programmeren en vliegtickets bij KLM
- Statistiek en fototaarten bij HEMA
- De stelling van Pythagoras en het bouwen van een
schuur
- Logaritmische functies en windturbines bij Eneco
In de filmpjes komt een professional aan het woord die laat zien welke wiskunde komt kijken bij een bepaald aspect van zijn of haar werk.
In de komende periode wordt gewerkt aan het uitbreiden van deze set van video's. Tijdens de dag van de vereniging van wiskundeleraren (november 2022) zal ook aandacht besteed worden aan deze video's en het gebruik in de klas. U kunt de filmpjes bekijken op het

ELWIeR (Expertisecentrum lerarenopleidingen wiskunde en rekenen) biedt ondersteuning aan de lerarenopleidingen wiskunde en rekenen in Nederland. In de jaren 2007-2009 is een basis gelegd voor samenwerking tussen opleidingen pabo, tweedegraads en eerstegraads, in de projectperiode ELWIeR I. In de cursusjaren 2010-2012 is gewerkt aan implementatie-activiteiten op het gebied van de kennisbases voor de lerarenopleiding. Drie koepels vormen de kern van het samenwerkingsverband: Panama voor pabo; SLW voor tweedegraads lerarenopleiding; Vadiwulo voor eerstegraads lerarenopleiding.

SIAM CONFERENTIE COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING 2023
|
Van 26 februari tot en met 3 maart vindt in de RAI te Amsterdam de SIAM CSE 2023 conferentie plaats. SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) is de grootste organisatie ter wereld op het gebied van toegepaste en industriele wiskunde, en de CSE conferentie is hun grootste conferentie met meer dan 2000 deelnemers. SIAM CSE zal nu voor het eerst buiten de USA worden gehouden, en wordt mede georganiseerd door de TU Eindhoven (chair: Wil Schilders). Recent is de ‘’call for contributions’’ uitgegaan, op de website https://www.siam.org/conferences/cm/conference/cse23 is alle informatie te vinden. We hopen dat veel Nederlandse onderzoekers naar Amsterdam zullen komen voor SIAM CSE 2023. De conferentie wordt voorafgegaan door een zogenaamde hackathon, waar bedrijven een uitdaging presenteren waar talentvolle jonge onderzoekers hun tanden in kunnen zetten gedurende het weekeinde. Op woensdag 1 maart vindt een publieksavond plaats, waar 5 prominente CSE wetenschappers zogenaamde TED talks voor het grote publiek zullen houden.

IMAGINARY EXHIBITION HAS STARTED
|
June 2 nd, the exhibition ''Imaginary: beauty and power of mathematics'' was officially opened in Leiden (European City of Science 2022) by mayor Lenferink. A group of some 50 guests attended the opening. The exhibition can be visited free of charge in Leiden, in the Old University Library, until July 25. Nijmegen will follow in September, Utrecht in October. On the website www.imagniarymaths.nl you can find all information, as well as a preview of the very attractive and beautiful catalogue, for sale for 5 Euros.

WORKSHOP AI AND MATHEMATICS – CONNECTING THE MATHS CLUSTERS
|
June 9-10, the first workshop of the AI & Mathematics initiative (AIM) took place at the CWI, co-organised by representatives of all 4 mathematics clusters and NWO. The aim of the workshop was to bring together researchers in the field of mathematical AI and to highlight mathematics as a key technology in AI research. More than 100 interested scientists participated in this fun workshop with interesting lectures (including Spinoza laureate Ieke Moerdijk), a strategy session and a nice dinner. We are happy with this success and look forward to the next events of AIM.

AINED – NATIONAAL GROWTH FUND
|
During the AIM workshop (see above), Inald Lagendijk gave a short presentation on AiNed. The programme promotes the development and application of AI in Dutch businesses and governments. The public-private multiannual programme AiNed puts the Netherlands in the leading group of AI countries and contributes greatly to the international competitive position.

The aim of the Fellowship grants is to make Dutch academic knowledge institutions more attractive to special and excellent AI researchers in the international competition for talent. This applies both to attracting new talent and to retaining talented researchers who receive competitive international offers. This call is warmly recommended to the Dutch mathematics community

On March 24 and June 16 the Research Committee of PWN held information meetings, online, about the ins and outs of applications in the framework of ERC and MSCA. CONSTANCE VAN EEDEN PhD FELLOWSHIP
|
To stimulate the recruitment of female PhD candidates and to draw attention to the position of women in science, Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) launches the Constance van Eeden PhD Fellowship. The fellowship offers a PhD position to a talented female student in mathematics, computer science or a related field. The PhD Fellowship is named after Constance van Eeden (1927-2021), who worked at CWI from 1954 to 1960 and was one of the first female PhD students in statistics in the Netherlands.
The number of female researchers in mathematics, computer science and related fields of science has been lagging behind for years. CWI wants to address this problem and create awareness about it by launching the Constance van Eeden Fellowship, aimed at talented female researchers who pursue a career in science. CWI had 20% female researchers in 2021. However, CWI aims for 30% (or more) female researchers. Angelique Schilder, head of HR and coordinator of Gender Diversity, says the following: "To realise an increase in the number of female researchers in our institute, something has to change and we hope that this Fellowship will contribute to that."

SUCCESS FORMULAS – NOW FOUR VIDEOS ONLINE
|
VMBO/Havo/VWO pupils often ask what the mathematics they are learning is used for. It is important that secondary school teachers of mathematics have source material to show the applications of mathematics in professions. Literally mathematics in the picture.
The Dutch Platform for Mathematics stimulates the availability of good material for this purpose and four videos (in Dutch) have already been made available:
- Linear programming and flight tickets at KLM
- Statistics and photo cakes at HEMA
- The Pythagorean theorem and building a barn
- Logarithmic functions and wind turbines at Eneco
The videos feature a professional explaining the mathematics involved in a particular aspect of his or her work.
In the coming period we will work on expanding this set of videos. The day of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics (November 2022) will also focus on these videos and their use in the classroom. You can see the videos on the

SIAM CONFERENCE COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING 2023
|
From 26 February to 3 March, the SIAM CSE 2023 conference will take place in the RAI in Amsterdam. SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) is the largest organisation in the world in the field of applied and industrial mathematics, and the CSE conference is their largest with over 2000 participants. SIAM CSE will now for the first time be held outside the USA, and is co-organised by TU Eindhoven (chair: Wil Schilders). Recently the call for contributions was launched, on the website https://www.siam.org/conferences/cm/conference/cse23 you can find all the information. We hope that many Dutch researchers will come to Amsterdam for SIAM CSE 2023. The conference is preceded by a hackathon, where companies present a challenge that talented young researchers can sink their teeth into during the weekend. On Wednesday 1 March, a public evening will take place, where 5 prominent CSE scientists will hold so-called TED talks for the general public.
