Wednesday 8 February

Next Wednesday we welcome Carol McNiven Young FRPS EFIAP/b DPAGB BPE5* to BPS, when she will present her talk:  Creative Studio Portraiture.

Carol is an award-winning amateur photographer who specialises in creative and artistic portraiture. She is a PAGB judge and being a relative newcomer to photography she likes to share her passion for self-development with others through lecturing, mentoring and organising photography experiences and workshops.
In this lectureCarol talks about the main techniques and methods of creative studio portraiture including concept generation, lighting, set design and model direction. She also covers the making of composites, and dispels much of the mystery around the making of them, sharing lots of hints and tips.

Carol’s website is: cmyimages.co.uk

Projected Image Competition Round 3
Last Wednesday saw Round 3 of the Projected Image Competition, which was judged by Peter Gennard MFIAP EFIAP/p from the Midlands. It's worth reminding members, especially those new to competitions, that a 2 or 3 pixel border around an image (when the overall image is dark) helps to make the picture stand out from the dark background of the screen - which is something the judge mentioned several times during the evening. Instructions for doing this can be found in issue 518 of the newsletter.

GB Cup
GB Cup and Trophy Competitions.

Although for each competition only the points from the highest scoring 12 images count towards your ranking, uniquely to these competitions you may enter additional images so it is a great opportunity to try out some ‘wildcard’ or ‘marmite’ entries that may catch the judges’ attention and do well – and if they don’t, it doesn’t harm our ranking or so goes the theory. In practice the scoring seems unduly harsh with some images with an extensive proven track record scoring very poorly.

So how did we do?

GB Trophy – Open (Prints)
We came a commendable 6th, with 153 points behind some of the ‘usual suspects’. Rolls Royce won with an astonishingly high score of 173. Smethwick 2nd (165), Arden 3rd (164), Dumfries 4th (163), Catchlight 5th (158).
  • HIGHLY COMMENDED – Barry Mead – Survivor

GB Trophy – Nature (Prints)
Another 6th Place with 145 points.  Rolls Royce 1st (168), Cambridge 2nd (154), Keswick 3rd (152), Arden 4th (150), Beeston 5th 147).
  • SILVER MEDAL – James Hardy’s choice – Richard Kay, Arctic Fox Facing a Storm.

GB Cup – Open (PDI)
We came a very disappointing equal 13th with 144 points, one point behind Dorchester,  Smethwick came top with 160 points.

GB Cup – Nature (PDIs)
Probably the closest of all the groups, we again came a disappointing equal 13th on 145 points along Catchlight and a four other clubs, North Norfolk took top spot with 154 points and Dorchester 2nd on 150.

Judges were:  Richard Speirs, Paul Radden, John McVie, Jane Lines, Adrian Lines and James Hardy

Full scores for each image can be seen by following this LINK, whilst the full club rankings can be found in the latest eNews.
