SCOTT NORTON will discuss
Developmental Editing: A Handbook for Freelancers, Authors and Publishers
Tuesday, May 19th at 7 PM
Norton, developmental editor and project manager for science at the
University of California Press, addresses the tricky business of
editing, which requires analytical flair and creative panache, the
patience of a saint and the vision of a writer. Using a series of
humorous and relevant "case studies," Norton explores the tough work of
a developmental editor. He gives aspiring editors the tools they need
to turn an idea or manuscript into a good book. He gives authors the
understanding they need to take advantage of an editor's advice. And,
he gives authors without the benefit of a developmental editor a way to
look at their own work with a critical eye.
"Scott Norton is no seat-of-the-pants developmental editor. He's a man with a method - practical, detailed, lucid, engaging. Even the most battle-tested editors and agents will rethink their tactics after reading this field guide to manuscript development." — Susan Wallace Boehmer, executive editor for trade book development, Harvard University Press.

GEOFFREY NUNBERG will read from
The Years of Talking Dangerously
Wednesday, May 20th at 7 PM
"There has never been," Nunberg writes, "an age as wary as ours of the
tricks words can play, obscuring distinctions and smoothing over the
corrugations of the actual world...Yet as advertisers and marketers
know, our mistrust of words doesn't inoculate us against them."
With illuminating intelligence and great humor, Nunberg decodes
the changing syntax of Time magazine, explains why grammar buffs are drawn to sarcasm, and deftly
unpacks the telling phrases of our national conversation.
Nunberg is a professor at UC Berkeley's School of Information. His
commentaries on language and politics have appeared regularly in the
Sunday New York Times and on NPR's "Fresh Air."
