Newsletter April 2015
Dear all,

This month we will talk about the sleep apnea disorder, a condition which is more and more recognized and diagnosed in nearly 4 percent of the western population.
We will also discuss a research, published in the Lancet last week, about mindfulness based cognitive therapy in patients with recurrent depression.

Best regards,
Bernadette

Sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a common sleepdisorder in our society, although often overlooked.
Getting older and/or being overweight are the most significant risk factors for developing sleep apnea. Furthermore, smokers, people suffering from high blood pressure or with previous heart problems may also be at risk.
Sleep apnea is one of the most common illnesses of this type. It is characterized by pauses in breathing (called apnea), which prevent the patient from attaining sufficient rest during his/her sleep. People with sleep apnea are rarely aware themselves having trouble breathing, therefore it can often only be treated when the episodes are noticed by someone else, or when the effects start showing on the body.
People with sleep apnea usually have issues with excessive daytime sleepiness and difficulty concentrating. In other words: fatigue. A slower reaction time and vision problems may occur. Children and adolescents may have learning problems and the risk of accidents also increases. Furthermore, people often wake up while suffering an episode, usually without realizing the cause.
To diagnose sleep apnea, the patient has to undergo a polysomnography. This test includes being monitored in a so-called sleep lab, where doctors are able to detect abnormalities during the patient’s sleep.
The treatments for mild cases of sleep apnea are often conservative treatments such as losing weight, avoiding alcohol and sleeping pills, using nasal sprays (to reduce snoring and improve airflow) and avoiding sleep deprivation. If the disorder is more serious, devices such as a positive airway pressure may be used; the patient will wear a mask and, while breathing, the air will automatically fill the lungs. Other treatments for severe cases include surgery.
Around 3,75% of the western population are believed to suffer from sleep apnea, many undiagnosed. If you think you might have a sleep disorder, we recommend to contact your doctor for further information and assistance.

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) in the prevention of depressive relapse.

Depression typically has a relapsing course. Without ongoing treatment, patients with recurrent depression have a high risk of relapse: 50-80%.
To stay well, patients with a relapse have to continue their antidepressants during 24 months. Because of side-effects and contra-indications a lot of people look for alternative treatments.
The Lancet published the 21st of April the results of a research about the effectiveness of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy compared with maintenance antidepressant treatment in the prevention of depressive relapse.
In this trial 424 patients in the UK, 212 were treated with MBCT and the other 212 continued their antidepressants.
The results showed that MBCT is as effective as continuing the medication.
