Hello Firstname

Wednesday 22 January
Next Wednesday's speaker is Mike Lane FRPS who will be presenting his talk, A Digital Lane. This covers Mike's first two years with a digital camera photographing wildlife in various places around the globe. Starting with black grouse in Scotland, the show moves into Finland for brown bears and diving ospreys and then to some amazing drinking pools for birds in Hungary. To find out more about Mike, visit his website at http://www.nature-photography.co.uk

BPS vs Reflex Camera Club
On Thursday 23 January we will be visiting Reflex Camera Club for the first BPS vs Reflex CC battle. This is a competition where both clubs provide a collection of images for judging by an impartial (hopefully) judge and the club with the most points is the winner. It would be really good if a large contingent of BPS members could come along to Reflex on Thursday to support BPS, the venue is St. Anne's Junior School, Langton Court Road, BS4 4EJ and starts at 7.30. Perhaps members interested in going to discuss car sharing at our Wednesday meeting

Projection Screen

In last week’s issue of the Newsletter I printed a short item about the position of the projection screen in the clubrooms and asked for members to email me to let me know their thoughts on the matter, in particular which position they thought is best for the audience in general. From the fact that I received a total of just 4 emails and 1 telephone call, I take it that the membership in general doesn’t really care where the screen is!

Clifton Photos Wanted
Andy Marker is starting to put together the title images for this year's Bristol Salon presentation. In the past we have used the Suspension Bridge logo that is on the BPS Handbook as a background to the opening sequence. This year we thought we might try something a bit different and use an image of Clifton terraces (West Mall would be good) or the bridge viewed from the Cumberland Basin and maybe including the gorge side leading up to the Clifton Hotel; we would then hope to use one of the images, suitably faded, to act as the background to the opening titles. If you have any images you think suitable, please email them to me at chairman@bristolsalon.co.uk

The Photographic Angle is holding a free photography exhibition which will be taking place in Bristol from Sunday 19th to Thursday 23rd January. BRI Photography Project
We have received the following from the BRI Photography Team. If you are interested in helping them with their project, please contact Lu Lu Evans directly at briphotoproject@gmail.com

I am writing to you on behalf of photographer Simon Roberts, who has been commissioned by the Bristol Royal Infirmary Hospital to create a series of artworks that will help bring a sense of identity to a number of inpatient departments within a major new building on Bristol’s most central hospital site.

Over the past year Simon has been creating a series of photographs which reflect the unique culture, society and landscape of Bristol and the South West region. They will be installed in the new BRI Hospital, which is due to open in August 2014.

As part of the commission, Simon is inviting the community of Bristol to work on a collaborative body of work where the public are able to share their own images which celebrate the city’s rich heritage. The public’s photographs are being displayed on an online gallery website and a selection will also be incorporated into a unique artwork to be installed on one of the new hospital wards.

We are contacting you to ask whether this project may be of interest to the Bristol Photographic Society. Simon is keen to reach out to local organisations working in Bristol and whom may be interested in photography or have a link to the BRI or the health sector. We’d like to create as rich and diverse gallery of photographs as possible and therefore would be delighted if the Society would like to be involved by submitting photographs or spreading the word about the project.

We are particularly interested in receiving alternative photographs of the Suspension Bridge and Bristol International Balloon Festival but any photographs from the region would be welcomed. The deadline for submissions is the end of February 2014.

You can find out more about the commission and how to submit photographs to the project on our website here: www.beholdrespondinspire.com.

Please note that all copyright remains with the holder and any photographs we use will be credited. We will not be using photographs for anything other than in relation to the BRI Photography Project. If you have any questions about the project please don’t hesitate to get in touch or see the FAQs on the website.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Lu-Lu Evans
