Wedding Beads

Every bride wants to look her best, irrespective of cost. I know, I used to photograph thousands of weddings.

There are many ways beads can add an individual touch to a wedding, apart from the bride. Beaded jewelry is needed for the bride & groom’s mothers’, the bridesmaids, special friends, and just about every lady attending:

Bridal Jewellery
White or subtle shades of pink freshwater pearls are ideal. One strand will make three or four floating necklaces. These are popular for weddings, giving the appearance of floating on a fine wire. Beads are crimped in place either individually or in small groups, single or multi-stranded. Freshwater pearl earrings are inexpensive or you can make them yourself with sterling silver wire.

Beading for Gowns
The favourites for beading gowns are tiny 3mm Swarovski crystals, small shiny beads, light-reflecting coating, and silver-lined seed beads. The aurora borealis effect from many gemstones is striking. All these add interest to the dress and look great on the photographs, especially as the wedding photographer will feature the bride’s and bridesmaid’s gowns. You can sew subtle little shapes, like flowers or butterflies, onto the gown with tiny seed beads. Longer patterns running right down the length of the dress look effective too.

Keep the bead colour the same or similar to the gown, so as not to distract from the dress’s elegance. Try to match the pattern in gown’s detail, to that on the tiara. If you have a floral design in your gown, look for a similar headpiece. A modern, plain white gown usually looks best with a tiara with straight lines or a geometric pattern.

Bridal Tiara Designs
Match details of the dress and tiara. If the dress has pearls or crystals, select a tiara with pearls or crystals. However, a tiara with only crystals or rhinestones will match any gown. Pearl tiaras go well with off-white or ivory gowns, and compliment a pearl necklace or earrings.

Make sure all the pieces of the bridal ensemble work together and that no one piece overwhelms another. Brides with short hair look fabulous wearing a tiara too – but choose a lighter one that needs only a few pins to hold it in place. Like a headband style or a more petite shape.A tiara should draw attention to the bride’s face by framing it. The wrong shape tiara can make the face look too long and thin, or too short and full.

Matching the face:

Round/full face: to make the face appear longer use a tiara with a peak.
Long face: needs headbands or a tiara with little or no height that extend over the head from one side to the other.
Oval face: avoid peaks at the top which make the face appear longer. Choose a headband, side hair comb, or hair pins.

Matching the gown:
To help decide on the size of beads to use, liken designing to a flower arrangement – start with the larger flowers first, then fill in with smaller ones. Bearing in mind the design must be functional and practical to wear.

White gowns: need a tiara that is silver-tone, rhinestone, or white pearl.
Ivory gowns: choose a tiara that has gold-tone or ivory pearls.
Champagne or dark ivory gown: choose a gold tone tiara or dark ivory pearls.
Diamond white gowns: this is a modern shade of gown, lighter than off-white, but not start white. Choose either gold, silver tone, or white pearl.

Peridot - the cooling gemstone for August

Just the name Peridot sounds summer cooling, and its vivid, shimmering aqua-green colour is the ideal gemstone to complement a light summertime outfit. Peridot goes so well with any light colour, blending subtly to add interest to a design. Peridot (pronounced pair-a-doe) is the gem variety of olivine, a mineral formed under intense heat. Perhaps named from the French word Peridot, meaning unclear, due to its inclusions and cloudy nature. Small crystals of peridot are often found in rocks by volcanoes and in meteors. Because the iron which creates the colour is an integral part of its structure, its colour is always green - ranging from transparent lime to olive green. One of the few gemstones of only in one colour.

Peridot has been mined as a gemstone for thousands of years, said to be the favorite gem of Cleopatra, and mentioned in the Bible. In ancient Egypt it was mined at night because legend tells that peridot was hard to see during the day, yet easily visible by lamplight. The Greeks and Romans called peridot Topazion and Topazius - the later named topaz, to end the confusion between the two. Peridot has also been confused with emerald and many jewelers refer to it as "evening emerald". Peridot was later used to decorate medieval churches, carried back to Europe by the Crusaders, like the huge stones of more than 200 carats in size at Cologne Cathedral.

The gemstone is actually known under three names: Peridot, Chrysolith (derived from the Greek word Goldstone and Olivin, because Peridot is the gemstone variety of the Olivin mineral. In the gemstone trade it is generally called Peridot, a name derived from the Greek Peridona, meaning something like giving plenty.

Peridot is recommended for insomnia, digestive problems and to stimulate the mind. Some say peridot has the power to drive away evil spirits, intensified when the stone is set in gold. And its also said to strengthen the power of any medicine drunk from peridot goblets. Peridot is for people with the star sign of Leo.

Carnelian - another gemstone for August

This flesh-coloured stone comes from the quartz family, and is usually bright orange to reddish orange, translucent to clear. However, it can be other colours like green or yellow. Carnelian has brought many ancient beliefs, like protection during travel after death and against evil. It is also believed to combat bad tempers. The name comes from the Latin word "Carnis" meaning flesh. The Roman thought that the darker Carnelian represented males and the lighter, females. Many believe that it creates a bond with man and nature.

Carnelian is for confidence. Said to help blood disorders and eliminate toxins from the body. Carnelian is in tune with the energies of the Earth, making you feel comfortable with your environment. Allowing you to pause and reflect, while feeling settled and more secure. Carnelian stimulates the reproductive organs too; hence its long use as a fertility symbol. It is also said to help creativity and have a clearing effect, replacing negative energy with positive. Making it easier to find direction and feel in control of your life.

A good stone for people starting new projects or who feel they are going nowhere. It motivates, allowing you to find the energy to make the most out of life. Carnelian is best for people with the zodiac sign of Leo, and for those born on a Friday.
