Hello Firstname

A Christmas Message From The Chairman
Happy Christmas to everybody
The time of year to reflect and look forward to next year. This year seems to have passed by very quickly!!
The prognosis is to speed up even more. I hope I can keep pace.

At BPS we have had another good year of all round improvement in all aspects of our activities. It would not be right to single out any group or person.
However, a great deal of heartfelt thanks goes out to everybody for their efforts in the running of the club and all its varied activities.
May we all continue to enjoy our Wednesday evenings, with all the variety we experience from such a varied programme.

Happy Christmas to everybody and a peaceful new year.

Jeff Hargreaves - BPS Chairman

Wednesday 20 December
Next Wednesday we have the highlight of the Montpelier social calendar, the BPS Christmas Social.
Here's a seasonal message from our Membership Secetary
It's that time of year again, when the great and the good convene for chat, food and (probably) a drink or two. No doubt all the 'old hands' will be there, but, if previous years are anything to go by, very few of the newer members will join us (and we have had 19 join since last Christmas). It does give people a chance to chat for more than a few minutes during the Wednesday coffee breaks,

or at the end of a meeting, when the designated 'locker-up' is pointedly looking at the clock. It's also quite good if you want to pick someone's brains or just have a good old gossip.

Why not come along? You may enjoy it and all it will cost you is to bring along a single plate of food or the equivalent in nibbles, biscuits etc or drink. Everything is shared, so there's no need to bring a turkey and all the trimmings or a case of champagne.

I promise not to make everyone wear their badges, so do come along if you can.

Christmas Social - Charity Auction
At this year's Christmas Social there will be an extra attraction - a sale of photographic equipment.
The sale will take the form of an auction (older members will remember the annual auction that used to be held in August each year), with all proceeds going to St Peter's Hospice (along with any unsold goods).
I'm sure that you all have a plethora of redundant kit that is clogging up the bottom of a cupboard somewhere, so this is just the opportunity to make space for the next attack of technology update! Just bring the stuff along on the night and we will endeavour to sell it and hopefully I will have found a willing volunteer to act as auctioneer on the night.
The auction will be run along the lines of a conventional auction with BPS taking a 25% commission on all sales, unless the owner has specified that all the proceeds can go to St Peter's. When you bring the items along please provide a list of the items you are offering for sale (include your name) and also let us know of any items which you want to have a reserve price.

Christmas Break
Don't forget, there is no meeting on 27 December, we re-assemble on January 3 when we will have a talk from Terry Donnelley FRPS FSWPP FBPE MPAGB EFIAP - My Mirrorless Camera Journey with Sony.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from the Newsletter Team.

DPIC
The WCPF Interclub Digital Projected Image Competition (DPIC) is being held at Exeter on 18 February. Tickets are now on sale and can be found on-line by following this link.

Bristol Salon of Photography
Fed up with being nice to everyone just because it's Christmas? Now's your chance to get away from it all and get your entry to the Bristol Salon submitted, thus killing two birds with one stone, firstly you've escaped the being nice to everyone bit and secondly you will have made me very happy.

For those of you who aren't too sure what the Bristol Salon is: it is an international photographic exhibition that has been running since the mid-1940s and is the largest exhibition of its type in the UK attracting entries from nearly 70 different countries. Entrants may submit up to 16 images across 4 sections (Open, Monochrome, Photo Travel and Nature) which are put before a panel of selectors who pick the top 20% to 30% or so to be accepted. Entry for BPS members is free as long as we receive your entry before 20 January, after that you will have to pay the full fee. This might seem like a long way off, but with Christmas and the New Year coming up you'll soon find that the closing date is upon you, so beat the rush and get your entry in now!

To help you with your entry there is a small tutorial that can be downloaded by following this link. When entering, be sure to tick the box on the first page of the entry system to say that you are a BPS member and fill in your BPS membership number which you will find at the top of this newsletter; when you get to the payment page at the end, click ALREADY PAID.

Here's hoping that we see a rush of entries, but in the meantime if you have any queries, feel free to email me at chairman@bristolsalon.co.uk

Disabled Photographers Society
BPS members may not be aware that we allow Unit 13 to be used by various charitable organisations. Among these is the Disabled Photographers Society who, twice yearly, use the clubrooms for their distinctions assessment. Last weekend saw the December assessment, which, as well as using our clubrooms also used two of our members as assessors, Barry Mead & Graham Reeves and Mike Bigger as projectionist. The image below shows Eddie Morton ARPS ADPS CPAGB of Amersham PS and Wycombe PS talking to one of the judges John Long. While Mike Birbeck (Seated), Margaret Sailsbury and Graham Reeve discuss Eddie’s panel for which he was awarded a Fellowship (FDPS). Barry Mead, is lurking just out of shot!

3 & 4 Feb

The Fotospeed Academy is holding a workshop at the BPS clubrooms in February to help those who are looking to go for distinctions with the likes of RPS, FIAP, PAGB, BPA and more. The course is being run by ‘The Welsh Dragon’, AKA Margaret Salisbury. Margaret will display examples of successful and also unsuccessful panels, to highlight their strengths and weaknesses. She will offer guidance to participants looking for Distinctions or running Open/International Exhibitions, and use her own experience to encourage and assist you.
She will also explain the up to date criteria for the different associations and John Herlinger from The Fine Art Print room will also be on hand to share his knowledge on the best ways to present your work for panels. Finally, you will be asked to bring your own work with you which will be displayed and reviewed by other members in the class. BPS already runs its own print mentoring evenings, but this could well be a useful addition to those evenings. The dates are 3 & 4 February (two courses). Full details can be found by following this link.
Until 8 Apr
The renowned wildlife photography competition, Wildlife Photographer of the Year, from the Natural History Museum is back at M Shed in the City Docks until 8 April, with 100 spectacular images. ITS NOT PARTICULARLY EASY FINDING "DATES FOR YOUR DIARY", SO I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF MEMBERS COULD LET ME KNOW OF ANY EVENTS, EXHIBITIONS OR PICTURE LOCATIONS THAT THEY THINK WOULD BE OF INTEREST. DATES AND WEB LINKS WOULD HELP

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Studio Bookings
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.
