In this issue:

Snow Day on The Farm

Dear Friends,
I am reading a book called "Creating the Person," by the Sufi teacher from the early 1900s, Hazrat Inyat Khan, and what I like, is that it is a practical dicussion on the qualities we each seek to cultivate in order to be at our best.

Here is a bit if what I got from lecture on Self-Control, and specifically, control of speech and action.

Our words are often the result of an inner impulse, to act without thinking things through. Without self-control, we often find Ourselves later in reflection thinking, “I wish I hadn’t said that” or “I wish I had said that differently.” But once it is said or done, it is too late.

Instead of reacting, or getting defensive, you exhibit self-control by listening and thinking before speaking. In this way, you are able to stay centered, and not be thrown off balance in your being. When we feel our body begin to react, become tense, uptight, we have lost our center or sense of balance. Our will power becomes lost to the power of emotions.

Hazrat Inyat Khan also states that it can be beneficial to develop in one’s nature a sense of indifference, what we on The Farm might refer to as remaining "unattached." Recognizing a certain detachment from our own opinion, realizing that your own point of view is not the absolute truth, and that quite often the truth lies somewhere in the middle between two opinions.

We may find that we are reacting to situations, which in the greater scheme of things, our reaction is out of proportion. When we have a sense of self-control, we are able to discriminate between issues of great importance and those to which we should remain indifferent, dispassionate, and unattached.

Use this filter: Look to see if your actions, if your words, create greater harmony or disharmony, for yourself, and for those around you.

Namaste y’all!

Speaking Engagements
At the same time, I recognize that I can reach a lot more people if I go outside the community. One of my goals is to speak at colleges and universities where I can talk to young people about Right Livelihood, Service, and Finding Sanity in an Insane World. This is a time when people need to hear an uplifting message of hope.

If you are part of an organization, event, or school (or you just want to learn more about my life's work), I invite you to visit my web site www.douglasstevenson.com, where you'll find information on my lecture topics and how to bring me to speak in your area.
Thank you for your interest, and your support. I hope to see you down the road.
