welcome to the fourth edition of the international music austria newsletter, designed to keep you informed on the latest developments in the Austrian music scene.

One should certainly not go too far out on a limb, but it seems as if the musicians of the local pop scene are currently receiving a lot more international recognition than in the past few years. This explains why local protagonists  are increasingly listed in the programs of major upcoming European music festivals.

Clermont-Ferrand (F), May // Festival Europavox is a global and multiform project entirely dedicated to the promotion of European musical diversity. The main event brings together more than 60 concerts and 20 000 people for a festival in Clermont-Ferrand in May and other concerts organized for special occasion. About 300 artists or bands of 32 different nationalities and genres have already played in several Europavox events. In addition to the concerts there are also meeting platforms for European professionals from the music scene and the media.

4. Primavera Sound (ES)

The 11th edition of San Miguel Primavera Sound will take place in Barcelona between the 25th and 29th May 2011. Artist include Animal Collective, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Belle & Sebastian, The Flaming Lips, John Cale & Band + Orchestra perform PARIS 1919 live, Mercury Rev perform Deserter's Songs, Mogwai, The National, Pulp and many more. San Miguel Primavera Sound will also host the second edition of PrimaveraPro, a meeting for professionals with many different activities all centred on music. This international meeting of the music industry is tailor made for professionals from the independent music sector with a programme that is full of showcases, meetings, conferences, workshops, etc. and will bring together 700 professionals and 1,200 journalists from the sector from all around the world.

Austria artists and the fair music project (coordinated by mica - music austria) will participate in this prestigious Catalan festival, demonstrating why the fair music initiative is considered an exemplary project.

5. Spot Festival (DK)

Ever since 1995, ROSA – The Danish Rock Council has been in charge of organizing the SPOT Festival. The ambition of the SPOT festival is to create a promotion platform for the Danish and Nordic music. The festival’s repertoire is dictated chiefly by the will to support new bands and artists that are of a quality to succeed internationally. InterSPOT, the international section of SPOT Festival will also take place again, albeit pushing the concept much further: this year SPOT has instigated on-stage collaborations between international and Danish acts in the form of 40-minute sets that include 4-5 tracks from each artist’s back catalogue. “By mixing foreign and Danish artists we want to create positive impact on both Danish and international tour legs of these acts and thus support the Danish & international career developments of the involved artists,” explains Christian Hald Buhl, international strategy manager at SPOT.
Among the highlights of the InterSPOT collaborations are: an unexpected get-together of Danish electrorokers Kiss Kiss Kiss with their Austrian counterparts Ginga - who by the way met for the first time at the SPOT on Denmark event in Vienna in 2010.

6. Sziget Festival (HU)

Budapest is one of the most beautiful and most exciting capitals of Europe - the 19th edition of Sziget Festival welcomes fans from 8th to 15th August at the same exciting island in the middle of the city. The newest venue of Sziget Festival is called Europe Stage, aiming to present bands from various parts of the Old World. Over 1000 bands and artists perform on 60 stages: pop, rock, metal, hiphop, dance, world music, theatre, performance arts and everything in between.

7. c/o Pop, Cologne (D)

The c/o pop is not only an exciting consumer festival. The C'n'B Convention is embedded into this great urban music festival with over 30,000 visitors (2010) with its central open-air stages situated in the immediate vicinity of the Convention. In addition the program Europareise provides a special international networking platform within the c/o pop festival and the C’n’B – Creativity & Business Convention.

Beside an fair music project appearance in the C´n´B conference programm, Elektro Guzzi and Sweet Sweet Moon will play at the c/o Pop Festival.

8. A spotlight on young contemporary composers living in Austria

mica - music austria has put together a promotional package consisting of several modules for the younger representatives of contemporary music in Austria. 23 composers are represented with their compositions on 3 CDs. Furthermore, the package includes individual booklets with biographical data, a journalistic portrait and selected compositions.

Represented composers: Johannes Berauer, Christoph Breidler, Bernd Richard Deutsch, Hannes Dufek, Marios Joannou Elia, Sonja Huber, Peter Jakober, Manuela Kerer, Matthias Kranebitter, Veronika Mayer, Lukas Neudinger, Julia Purgina, Eva Reiter, Gerald Resch, Manuel de Roo, Veronika Simor, Tomasz Skweres, Judith Unterpertinger, Judit Varga, Simon Vosecek, Michael Wahlmüller, Ernst Wally, Thomas Wally.

The CDs and brochures will be distributed to multipliers at all festivals where mica - music austria is represented with an information stand (eg. Wien Modern, Witten, Donaueschingen).

The CDs and brochures will be sent with cooperation offers to relevant festivals and radio journalists in Europe.
