Innovative solutions to working whilst travelling - News from the UK
An article in the UK Economist highlights a really creative solution that could help commuters reduce some of the non -productive commuting time.
"Travel through certain railway stations in London next year and you'll be able to rest, recuperate and do some work in newly created on-site offices. The Office Group, a provider of flexible working spaces, is working with Network Rail, the owner and operator of Britain's railway infrastructure, to roll out projects at five London stations, starting with a 250-seat space at Paddington. It's due for completion by mid-2012.  The scheme is aimed at rail passengers wanting to put the time they spend at the station to good use"  More details of this scheme can be found here.
Fifty Years of Labour Force- then and now
Australia in 2011 is a very different place to the Australia of 1961. This ABS research compares then and now and pays particular attention to a number of important trends over the past half century: the increase of women working, the rise of part-time employment, and changes within industry and occupation. The research highlights the fact that “today, people are working an increasingly diverse range of hours and patterns, often related to their stage of life or family circumstances. Flexible hours of work are important, as are access to family friendly leave provisions and affordable child care”. ... “Finding ways to balance work and family life is a constant challenge, especially for families with young children. Achieving this balance is important for the well-being of parents and their children.” read more . We would suggest that this report would be particualrly useful for those who need to reinforce the need and demonstarte the case for for comprehensive Diversity/Work/Life strategies.
Flexible Working in New Zealand. - A report on what has been achieved since the introduction of their legislation which gives carers the 'right to request' a flexible work arrangement.
The report sets out the results of quantitative and qualitative surveys conducted by the Department of Labour in 2010. Some of the findings show that flexible work arrangements are common in many workplaces throughout New Zealand. Overall, 70% of employers report having some or all of their employees working flexibly. Among employers who have some or all of their staff working flexibly, 76.1% reported they incurred no costs. Of those employers who said they incur some costs associated with flexible work arrangements, a majority said that these costs were reasonable. Click here to go to the full report.
