Eighth Christmas Day

1 Corinthians 10:4 . . . That rock was Christ.

HE SHALL BE CALLED: THE ROCK

The old year ended with bad news and more bad news. The prospects for a better new year don't look all that promising. Many wonder if we are headed for a second Great Depression.

In these uncertain times, people are looking for stability -- something dependable they can trust, a solid foundation on which they can plant their feet. Many feel that with a new president things will improve and become more secure. In a certain sense, maybe they will. Perhaps by this time next year Wall Street and Main Street will be on a firmer financial footing.

Yet even if the economy does turn around within the year, mankind will still find himself on very shaky ground. Soaring stock prices, gainful employment and affordable housing do very little to insure real stability. For one, all of these things can be lost in the blink of an eye. More significantly, none of these things can get the sinner right with God nor prepare him for life beyond the grave.

Real security means building in faith on the Rock, Jesus Christ. With Jesus under our spiritual feet, no storm -- economic, emotional, or spiritual -- can bring us down.

Our sins cannot sweep us away into hell. Jesus has already swept away the world's sin (yours too!) by living, dying, and rising for all.

No financial downturn can ruin our lives. Jesus has promised to provide for all our earthly needs. Our heartaches and tears cannot overwhelm us. Jesus' Word has power to heal our souls and mend our broken hearts.

What kind of year will 2009 be? We have no crystal ball to see into the future, but we do have a solid rock upon which to stand. A Rock that will perfectly support us in time and throughout eternity.
