John 16:12-15 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you."

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE TRIUNE GOD

The truth that the Spirit of truth unfolds and applies to human hearts is not just any truth. Nor is it a new truth. This is the truth which Jesus has revealed in His words and actions. This is the truth of salvation, the truth that centers in the person and work of the Son of God made man -- the Son sent by the Father and witnessed to by the Spirit.

This is the truth about the Triune God -- the God who in love reaches out to lost and condemned sinners. The truth into which the Spirit of truth leads and guides Jesus' disciples is the truth about the Father's plan to set sinful rebels right with Himself. This is the same truth the Son of God puts into action in His obedient life and sacrificial death.

And this we know and believe: this is the truth in which believers today put their confidence because the Spirit enabled those first disciples to recall Jesus' words accurately and record them truly -- and then the same Spirit worked in human hearts and lives through that truth.

All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given,
the Son, and Holy Ghost, supreme in highest heaven,
the one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore;
for thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.
