From the Church Guy
Happy first day of spring!  May 1!

I know, I know.  Spring began on March 20.  But that's just rediculous. Even April seldom feels like spring around here.

The great writer Kurt Vonnegut, who had lived in Schenectady and Ithaca, said that in upstate NY, we have not four but six seasons.  Summer is of course in July and August, and autumn takes place in September and October.  In November and December, nature is in process of shutting down, and he called those months "locking."  And then January and February are real winter.

He referred to March and April as "unlocking," as nature gradually unlocks and gets ready for new grass, leaves, and warmth.

This mental scheme means more to me than "spring comes on March 20."  I love our part of the world, but spring does not happen for me in March!

Happy May 1, now that nature has "unlocked!"  Thanks be to God for the beauty of new growth that we see all around us in nature, the "other book" of God!

 St. Mark's Table, May Edition

Come to the table on Tuesday, May 20!  We'll gather in the undercroft at 6:00
p.m.  You bring your own place setting and some food for the common table.  We'll eat, we'll sing, and we'll make Eucharist, and be on our way rejoicing at 7:30.

 Youth Group Get-together

One last chance to gorge on pizza before the school year ends, and make fun of Eric Laine at the same time!  On Sunday, June 1, at 11:30, the youth group will get together after church.  Pizza, games, and fun, as always, with Fr. Mark, Sabrina (and Ella and Layla, our youngest members at age one and three!), and Eric.  Come for the fun!

Here's What We Are Reading in Book Club
At our May meeting, we will discuss Ernest Hemingway's classic tale THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA.  Published in 1952, it was awarded a Pulitzer Prize and was cited in the Nobel Prize awarded to Hemingway a few years later.  It was the last major work published in his lifetime and he referred to it as the best he could write.  The story centers on an aged fisherman and his struggles with a great marlin in the Gulf of Mexico.  It features Hemingway's short, terse prose and the emotional weight of a suspenseful story.
