The Lion's Roar
St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Chenango Bridge, NY
February 2013
From the Rector...
"If the only prayer you say in your whole life is 'Thank you,' that would suffice."

A mystic of the church said that in the middle ages, and it's still true.  The best prayer, the heart of all prayer, is gratitude.

Not only that, it's true of our conversations with one another, too.  And I want to say thank you to the people of this church family.  As my wife Paula continues her chemotherapy treatment for cancer, you have been a rock for us.  You have sent us cards and emails; you have given gifts to her; you have prayed; you have offered me so many words of hope and encouragement; and you have supported us with your love.  I feel so lucky to have St. Mark's as my church family.

She continues to do well, and we thank you for your continuing love and support.  I'm not exaggerating when I say...You're the best!

Special Youth Meeting This Sunday!
Father Mark invites all our youth from grades 6-12, to be accompanied by at least one parent, to a special meeting on Safe Church this Sunday, February 3, at 11:30.  He is one of the diocesan trainers for the Episcopal Church program to prevent child sexual abuse, and would like to spread important information as far as possible.  He will show a 30-minute video produced by the national church (suitable for this age group to view), and will lead dicsussion.  Then we'll enjoy pizza together.

(P.S. He would also like to have a group picture taken at 11:30 of all of the teens who have worked on building wheelchair ramps.  Broome County Council of Churches will honor our team in May and they would like a photo as soon as possible!)

Ash Wednesday: "Remember That You Are Dust..."
The season of Lent is one of reflection, prayer, and repentance.  It begins on Ash Wednesday, February 13.  St. Mark's will offer three celebrations of the Eucharist with imposition of the ashes on our foreheads as a sign of our mortality and penitence: 6:30 a.m., noon, and 6:00 p.m.  Let us begin our journey to Easter together.

A Priest and A Rabbi Walk Into a Bar...
Sounds like the start of a laugh, doesn't it?  Father Mark is delighted to announce that he and his friend, Rabbi Tziona Szajman of Temple Israel in Vestal, will offer a series of conversations on humor and faith.  The sessions will be after the services on Sundays, at 11:30 in the undercroft.  There will of course be coffee and refreshments, and the two clergy friends will talk about humor as a dimension of religion -- from the classic texts; as a way of coping with pain; and as a way to keep ourselves humble and honest.  The series will begin Sunday, February 17, and will run for five Sundays.  They have already offered this presentation to BU's Lyceum, and it has been well received by an interfaith audience!

 2013 Calendars
I would like to thank everyone who brought in their extra calendars.  The residents of the nursing homes appreciate being able to have one in their room.  They are pleased that they can choose one of their liking.

Dacadent Desserts, Tasty Treats and Delicious Delicacies
On Tuesday, February 12, come join your St. Mark's family in the undercroft from 7:00 - 8:00 for an evening of yummy desserts as we celebrate Shrove Tuesday.  The day before Lent begins is traditionally known as Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras.  Join us as we gather to enjoy a 'feast ' of sweets before the 'fast' of Lent.  Bring a dessert to share and your own place settings.  Remember, there will be plenty of dessert to sample, so think about small servings of tasty tidbits!

The Book Club is Back From Its Winter Break
In February the book club will be reading CHINA RUN by David Ball.  Inspired by a true-life incident, this story of an American's adoption of a Chinese infant gone awry takes the reader on a breathtaking chase across China that is gripping, compulsively readable, and frighteningly real.

The next meeting of Church Women United is Friday, March 1, 10 a.m. - Noon at the Chenango Bridge United Methodist Church.

This is World Day of Prayer.  The meeting includes devotions, singing, and a program with the theme of "I was a Stranger and You Welcomed Me."

A light lunch is served at about 11:30.  The other 2 meetings this Spring are April 13 and May 3.  Please consider attending.

Church School
What a wonderful group of children St. Mark's is blessed with!  Happy faces and laughter are always a great way to start a Sunday morning, and our classrooms are filled with those.  From our Nursery with two to six little ones learning to play together, to our 1st-3rd grade where we can have up to 12 rambunctous children on an average (bless those teachers!), to our 4-6th grade which holds at about 4 or 5 but can have up to 8 pre-teens, it makes for a pretty great Sunday school.

The Lenten season is fast approaching, and with it comes Lenten programs.  During Father Mark's Lenten program for the adults and teens of St. Mark's, the Christian Ed Commission will offer a Lenten craft project for the children of the parents staying or any child who wishes to participate.
