Hello Firstname

Wednesday 13 August
Next Wednesday we get the chance to see the digital presentation by N&EMPF (North & East Midlands Photographic Federation) of their annual print and projected image exhibition. This is probably the most professionally put together CD presentation we get throughout the year and is put together by Jim Hartje from Peterborough with commentary by Ashley Franklin from Belper. Ashley is an ex Local BBC radio presenter so we can expect an extremely slick commentary.

Digital Imaging Group
What can I say, it's chocolate biscuit time again (you can see where my priorities lie!), next Monday, 11 August, is the next meeting of the DI Group. As usual all members are welcome at the clubrooms at 7.30pm. Members are encouraged to bring along pictures, either prints or projected image (jpeg on memory stick only, please) and these can be just to show fellow members what you have been up to recently or to ask for help or guidance on a particular problem.

Arrivederci, Neil
BPS is arranging a night out to wish Neil McCoubrey well with his move to Scotland in September. If you'd like to attend, please indicate the dates when you are free in August, using this link, and we'll go for the most popular date. When we have numbers we will arrange venues for drinks and dinner.

Exhibition to Visit
The Photographic Angle is holding a free photography exhibition at Castlemead, Lower Castle Street, Bristol, BS1 3AH from Saturday 23rd to Wednesday 27th August on the theme of “200 Faces”.  (Please note that this venue provides guided tours and so a wait of a few minutes may be necessary until one of the guides is available.)

200 Faces is an exhibition of 200 portrait photographs by 191 photographers.
This exhibition is testimony to the ever-present, dynamic and enthralling genre of portrait photography as captured by an exciting group of contemporary image-makers in all stages of their careers. These photographers, from all around the world exemplify the diversity of portrait photography, from the environment in which the subjects sit, to the expressions and emotions, uniforms and props that build the information in the image.

National Trust Book - Fox Talbot
Fox Talbot & the Reading Establishment by Martin Andrews

The very first book in the world to be illustrated with photographs was produced in Reading between 1844 and 1846.

In 1843, William Henry Fox Talbot and Nicolaas Henneman set up the first commercial studio to mass-produce photographs from negatives and they chose the Berkshire town of Reading as its location. The Reading Establishment, as it became known, marks a pivotal moment in the development of photography.

Martin Andrews tells the story of these momentous events and places them in the context of the discovery and early history of photography.

Told in a lively and engaging way and illustrated with Martin’s witty pen-and-ink drawings as well as original photographs, the story starts with a mystery. Who is the strange, foreign gentleman buying unusual substances in the chemist shops of Reading – is he a forger or a spy?

This book is normally £10 but as it is the 20th publisher's 20th anniversary, they are offerig a 20% discount off all orders placed via their website, on the 20th of each month throughout the year. This means that 'Fox Talbot & the Reading Establishment' is only £8.00 if ordered on the 20th of August, September, October, November and December!
