Zoom Update

“Print Hybrid Meeting Statement

Following the meeting we held two weeks ago, when we had a print evening with the Southampton Salon at the clubrooms, I received several positive comments, which (following past print meetings and their many negative comments) leads me to think that all the extra work that I have carried out is finally paying off!  So, what have I done or am I doing??? Following the last print night early this year where the negative feedback reached its peak, I decided on a 5-step plan to do all I could to overcome the problems. However, this will also mean that at the end of the plan I will have exhausted my armoury and that these will have been the final steps that I can take (period) to overcome the issues necessary to make future print evenings a viewable experience for those at home, at work, in a field or on the side of a mountain.

Before I let you know what those are, please be aware just because I’m trying things out to see what works – it doesn’t mean that what I use will be the same for all future print hybrid meetings and it’s important to note that for the last print evening I used my own device (yes it was a Mac laptop) but please also note that it had significantly lower processing power and speed than the BPS desktop computer.

So, without further ado… below are the things I’m looking to try out:
  1. Ensuring our Zoom account can broadcast at HD outside of the default settings – This was done with the Zoom presentation two print evenings back - so this is not a factor anymore!
  2. Carry out Zoom Tech support advice to run a “clean” re-install of the Zoom software.
  3. Setting the CCTV camera variables to “fixed”, eg exposure, focus, colour balance etc to reduce the auto correction of settings by the camera and additionally only using camera zoom pre-sets (NO zooming)
  4. Using a different device to see if current hardware is suitable (it does mean trying both another computer and the desktop)
  5. Use a different platform for example Microsoft Teams (but I can already hear the uproar and complaints about this, so if the other steps work, this will be skipped)
So, the final thing left to test is using BPS hardware along with the other things mentioned – to provide what I hope will be the same viewing experience that we had with the Southampton Salon.

However, you must also bear in mind that I’m just one person….. I cannot attend every meeting or print night to maintain consistent tech behaviours every week. So yes, when others cover this complicated task of running a Hybrid meeting for prints, there will inevitably be some mishaps (any complaints will be binned!) but hopefully best practice will be shared out.

Thanks for reading. Matt de-B“

BPS Trophies & Medals

As those of you who attend Unit 13 will know the trophy cabinet is now in place, but it is not just as a club ornament - it is to display the club’s trophies which have a long history going back to the 1930’s.

To see the full list of trophies and their allocation, please follow this link.

It is intended to present the trophies on the night of the appropriate Competition.

We have missed the annual PDI Monthly Competition and next week is the fourth round of the Print Monthly Competition, but as David Alderson is away we propose to present the following to the winners of the Club & Intermediate classes of both the bi-monthly PDI & Print competitions on the evening of 4 May. The remaining trophies will be presented on the relevant competition evenings.

The medals will be presented on the evening of the Creative competition.

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue
