Next Wednesday we welcome Pete Quin BSc FBIS FRAS who will be delighting us with his talk entitled Grabbing Every Photon - Astro Photography for Fun and Frustration. Pete is a larger than life character (I'm sure that he won't mind me describing him thus) and, despite the fact that we have had a couple of talks on astro photography already this year, Pete is bound to show us a whole new slant on the subject.
Pete is a broadcaster, musician, presenter and writer on Astronomy and Astronautics and is Chairman of Bristol Astronomical Society.
I asked Pete to describe his talk, this is what he wrote:

In a real rollercoaster of a talk, I will explain the problems of astrophotography and how the NASA and the major observatories try to overcome them. I’ll then show how the amateur astrophotographer can attempt to emulate these techniques to produce images that would not have been possible a few years ago. I will bring along some examples of the sort of equipment that you might choose to use, from cheap and cheerful to highly specialised. I’ll conclude by showing you how modern free (yay!) software can help overcome living at the bottom of 60 miles of turbulent atmosphere to to turn grotty pictures into ones you’d show your Mum.

The closing date for the forthcoming Annual Print Competition is next Wednesday 15 May. The judge this year is Robert Harvey BA ARPS EFIAP MCIWEM CSci CEnv (no, I still don't know what they stand for either!).
Full details of the competition and the rules can be found in your BPS Handbook p22 et seq.

All members are invited to the monthly meeting on Monday 13 May. In my absence this meeting will be chaired by our club chairman, Jeff Hargreaves assisted by Mike Bigger at the club PC. As usual I hope members will bring their presentations either as prints or digital files (in jpg format, sRGB colour space and any size) on a memory stick on a folder of your name. There is also an opportunity to ask for comments or advice on photographic problems from fellow members.
Following the recent creative image workshops I do hope that those who attended, or indeed others, will carry on constructing new images using their own image stock. If there is a need to have one more session for further help or critique ( there can never be enough sessions for creative work ) I may be able to arrange it on a Tuesday. Don’t forget that the closing date for Bob Faris trophy for creative competition is not far away on 12 June.

As many will know, BPS is one of the two clubs representing the WCPF at the PAGB Inter-Club PDI Competition at Warwick University in July, below is a copy of the PAGB flyer advertising the event. It would be really great if members could go along to show support for BPS at what is always a great day out. Click on the flyer to find out more and to purchase tickets.

If you use the Photographers Ephemeris, the following will be of interest to you: |
New Open Street Map style now available
We've updated the Open Street Map style used in the The Photographer's Ephemeris mobile apps - we're now using the Transport style from Thunderforest. This is great for road and transportation details, showing a lot more detail in terms of street names, railways and public transportation routes. As with our previous OSM style, this map type is available offline - simply view what you need, and the tiles will automatically be cached on your device for offline use.
Action required: please update your app by May 31
With the move to the new map style - which means a new map tile server - we plan to decommission the current OSM server on May 31 2019. Please update to the current version prior to that date in order to keep using the OSM map style within TPE. Other functions within the app are unaffected. The current versions are 4.6 on iOS (update instructions) and 1.7.1 on Android (update instructions).

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
