January 2017
From the Church Guy

Is this the month of the Two-Faced God?

January got its name from ancient Roman mythology. "Janus" was the god of beginnings, doorways, and endings. He was depicted with two faces, since he looks to both the future and the past. (For those of you keeping score, the Greeks had no equivalent god, so Janus was distinctive to the Romans.)

In our thinking, "two-faced" is not a good thing. We think of someone as two-faced when they are hypocritical, or sneaky, or have double standards.

The God of our faith is not two-faced, although our God regards both past and future. But the God of our faith is also not two-faced in another sense: there is no wavering in God's love for us. There is no back-and-forth from acceptance to rejection. "God is love," according to the First Letter of John, and that's the only face of God we'll ever see.

So in this cold month of January, may God's love bring warmth to you and to everyone you love!

The Annual Meeting of St. Mark's Church

The Rector, Wardens, and Vestry invite you to the Annual Parish Meeting of St. Mark's Episcopal Church on Sunday, January 29, 2017, at 11:30 a.m. There will be food, of course...Laura Chestnut has graciously agreed once again to feed us with her wonderful strata. We are asked to bring either a green salad or a fruit salad. We will have reports on the state of the parish. We will honor the members of the Vestry who are completing their terms, and we will elect one Warden and two Vestry members. Above all, we will enjoy one another's company, and give thanks to God for the blessings given to this parish church in the Episcopal Diocese of Central New York!

St. Mark's Table for January

On Tuesday, January 15, at 6:00 pm, you have an opportunity for friendship and fellowship. It's the St. Mark's Table, a monthly potluck meal. All you need do is bring a dish to share with the group, and your own place setting. We eat at 6 while enjoying conversation, and finish the evening with a little music and a simple Eucharist around the table.  We're done at 7:30. This is a relaxing time to be with church friends.

Hey, Youth Group!  Let's Go Skating!

The youth group will be going ice skating at Broome Community College some time soon.  Watch for more details.  It was great fun last year, especially when we saw the skill level Fr. Mark brings to the ice (hint:  pretty low level).
