Wednesday 10 May

Next Wednesday our speaker will be coming to us through the ether when we will be treated to a talk by Warren Alani ARPS, DPAGB, AFIAP, ABPE entitled Seeing is BelievingThis is a monochrome talk which explores how, by limiting our colour palette, and freeing ourselves of expectations, we can learn to appreciate the finer details and little joys within the still image.

Photographs are presented here from various areas of Warren's photography, ranging from architecture, to sport, to travel, and will also include some details about his journey as a photographer.
Warren is a photographer based in Northamptonshire. He picked up his first camera as a teenager – a Zenit ET 35mm SLR, which is where his obsession with photography began. In 2009, Warren decided to turn his pastime into something bigger. Taking the knowledge and skills he learned during his youth, he immersed himself in the new age of cutting-edge technology and turned his hobby into craft.
In just a few short years, Warren has cultivated a clear artistic direction and a distinctive style in his work. His photography particularly focuses on sports, portraiture, architecture and travel, as well as street-style snapshots taken on the spur of the moment. His acute attention to detail has earned him the recognition needed to gain the letters after his name that you see above.

His work has been featured in many prominent photography publications such as the International Digital Camera magazine and The Royal Photographic Society Travel Year Book, amongst many others. In recent years, Warren has become a highly engaged member of the photography community, and a proud member of the Smethwick Photographic Society. When he’s not chasing the perfect exposure, you can find him regularly presenting talks, workshops and lectures at photography clubs all over the U.K.

Digital Imaging Group
DI Meeting Monday 15 May 2023 7.30 pm  (NOT 8th May )

The next DI group meeting in May was originally scheduled for 8 May before it was declared to be a public holiday for the Coronation. It is now moved a week later to 15 May to allow for those planning to take a long weekend off.

The meeting is open to all BPS members. This is a gentle reminder to all members that it is an ideal opportunity to share your images with fellow members to show what you have been working on and enjoying making images. If you are preparing for club competitions (still a couple left in BPS ) or other salons you may want to get a second opinion at the DI meeting from your fellow members or you might just enjoy showing off your work and experiments in an informal atmosphere.

When you are ready please email your images for presentation to reach me by 6pm-ish Sunday 14 May. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). If you wish to show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox if convenient, but I am not equipped to receive by direct transfers from Google or Apple Mac systems.

Annual Print Competition - Closing Date Next Wednesday
Wednesday next week (10 May) is the final submission date for entries to the Annual Projected Image Competition.

The rules can be found in full in the Members' Portal on the club website, but it is sensible to emphasise some aspects of those. There is a limit of four images allowed in your entry. The Annual Competition is popular and as a result it is sometimes necessary to cull entries. So please be sure to number your entries in preference order of them being retained in the competition, 4 being the least and 1 being the most preferred.

There is not a prescribed section to the competition but there is a Nature section. Entries to this, which is open to all levels, must use the class letter Y. Note the definition of Nature images in the competition rules.

Finally, and to answer a couple of queries put to me, images submitted to the club Bi-monthly competitions are eligible for entry to the Annual PI competition. You must not re-submit images previously submitted to the Annual PI competition in past years.

News From Across The Pond
I've received the following from Mike Martin about the PSA Interclub PDI Competition:

Hi All,

Chuffed. The first results are in – the Open Colour PDIs .... we finished first in Division E (albeit a tie) so we shall be promoted to group D next season.

Below are the individual scores (clearly not everything was to the judge’s liking – not fans of creative nor dance it appears!  Never mind.

Well done to Jay (again) and Andrew.  Our awarded images (certificates attached) join those from earlier rounds to be re-judged for the end of year individual awards.
