Herotodus and the Water News

Someone said that if you read the considerable works of the Greek historian Herotodus there is no reason to read the daily news. That's because by the 5th Century B.C. Herotodus had already recorded all the deeds, good, bad, and indifferent, that people are capable of. Why continue to re-read the endless repetition of wars, pestilence, crimes and stupidities?

We've decided that the same holds true for news about water. For years we've been repeating the same stories: we have drought, floods, hurricanes, water wars, pollution and more pollution, dead fish, weird ocean creatures, climate change, political chicanery, corporate abuse, dying species, broken pipes, broken dams, broken treaties.

So, if you want water news, please read the histories of Herotodus, or the hundreds of good sources of news about the weather and dams and water treaties to be found in newpapers and on the web.

By the way, Herotodus showed that he understood the supreme importance of water in shaping world events in one of his most quoted statements: "Egypt is the gift of the Nile." His meaning is clear: No water, no people. No Nile, no Egypt.

FAQs

This section always includes actual questions received since the previous Occasional and our actual answer.

Question:

Looking for information/recommendations on a RO system to feed a fridge for the ice maker and water dispenser. Since it is only for the fridge no faucet is needed. Also, location this is going is on a well with pressure between about 32 and 60 PSI. It is a typical residential application so not a ton of production needed. If someone can point me to one of your systems or help with a design that would work well, that would be great.

Answer:

There are things to consider if you're installing a RO for a refrigerator only.

First, location.

The unit needs access to a drain and to a water source. It also has a storage tank, so you need some space. If you can install under a sink and run a single tube to feed the refrigerator, that's the best way. If you have a basement, basement installations with access to inlet water and a drain work great. Sometimes people want to install an RO unit behind a refrigerator or in a nearby cabinet. This is almost always impossible because you can't get to a drain and you need space for the storage tank.

Second, distance.

If the refrigerator is more than a few feet from the RO unit, I suggest you have us build the RO unit with 3/8" tubing "tank to faucet." You'll get better pressure and more water volume this way. (No charge for this upgrade.) If you have an extra long run (more than fifteen feet) to the refrigerator you may need a "demand pump" to boost the water along. The pump is an upgrade that adds to the price.

Since you won't need the faucet, we'll take $38 off the purchase price of the RO unit. All tubing and fittings needed to connect to the refrigerator are included without charge.

This unit would have to be ordered by phone to make sure we build it exactly as needed.
