Next week we welcome sports photographer, Alex Rotas to BPS when she will be presenting her talk: Sports Photography With a Twist: Challenging Ageism through Photography.
This is what Alex says about her talk:
I’m an award-winning sports photographer specialising in photographing sportsmen and women in their 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s – and yes, beyond! – who still compete in the sport they love in national and international championship events.
|
|
Ageist stereotypes persist in our society but it’s hard to hang on to a conviction that once you pass let’s say 60 you should be slowing down and putting your feet up when looking at an image of an obviously ‘elderly’ man or woman doing the pole vault or high jump or racing to the finish line in a sprint. In several public outdoor exhibitions I’ve had, I’ve seen people walk past one of my photographs, stop and walk back again, and then smile, clearly surprised – but also it would seem delighted - by what they’ve seen! I bought my first camera when I was 60, ahem, some 15 years ago now, so I’m an older person taking photographs of older people, and I’m having the time of my life. Do come and I’ll show you some photos and tell you a bit about my story and the amazing people I’ve been lucky enough to meet along the way.
Below are some images from the talk: |
Have a look at Alex's website to see more examples of her work.

DI Group club/zoom meeting 12 February, 7.30 pm
The January meeting in the clubroom was wholly taken up by Rachel’s demo of Affinity Photo software. As a follow up Rachel sent a link to the Affinity’s website for further information and a link to their video tutorials –
The next meeting of the DI group is on Monday 12 February in about ten days’ time. It is in the regular format of presentations submitted by members. This is the advance information to invite to all BPS members to share their images in an informal atmosphere. It is also a good opportunity to invite comments on your images from your fellow members, especially if you are planning to submit them for competitions or exhibitions. You are also welcome to just sit and watch the proceedings if you wish.
For the submission of the images I would still like to maintain the current system of sending them to me before the meeting. It allows me to prepare the presentation folder in advance for a smooth presentation. When you are ready, please email your images for presentation (about 2 to 20 minutes) to reach me by 6pm-ish Sunday 11 January. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). To show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox link if convenient.

A Beyond the Wall workshop with Rose Atkinson and ICM.
Following on from Rose Atkinson’s recent talk I have contacted her with a view to arrange a workshop in Wells to learn how to achieve images using ICM. Further details are given in the workshop summary - click here to download.
Rose is happy to accommodate groups on our chosen dates and as it is limited to six persons if there is a wider interest then I can arrange several sessions.

The annual Bristol Light Festival is taking place every evening until 11 February.
Bristol Light Festival is a free to attend event that fills the city with light and colour, showcasing Bristol as the vibrant, playful and creative city that we know and love.
Each edition of Bristol Light Festival features world premier works alongside some of the best of the UK’s talent, all making their Bristol debut at carefully selected locations across the city centre. Visitors can wander and explore the city’s streets to see the light art works come to life and enjoy Bristol’s wonderful retail and hospitality businesses along the way.
Bristol Light Festival appears along some of the city centre’s well-trodden paths as well as in some unexpected locations. At each spot visitors will be able to see, experience and play with installations that are visiting the South West.
The event is the perfect opportunity for friends, colleagues, and families to meet for an evening in Bristol. All Bristol Light Festival events are open to everyone across the full duration. We can’t wait to welcome you to explore Bristol through light.

If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).
|
Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes |
