The Lion's Roar
St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Chenango Bridge, NY
December 2016
From the Church Guy
Here's why I like our new bishop.  She is FUNNY!
Bishop-elect DeDe Duncan-Probe will be ordained our bishop on Saturday, December 3, and I know St. Mark's will enjoy her visits when that time comes.  I like the fact that she has a good sense of humor.  If I were in charge of the ordination process, I would require that every single person hoping to be a deacon, priest or bishop would be tested for a sense of humor.  In my mind, it's essential for being a compassionate and caring pastor.
A sense of humor keeps us down to earth and willing to see other points of view.  DeDe passes that test!  I've enjoyed her talks already.
Besides, she has a Harley.  How can we go wrong with a biker as our first female bishop?

St. Mark's Christmas Schedule
Saturday, December 24 - Christmas Eve
4:00 p.m. Family Eucharist
(A 40-minute service with singing led by Father Mark, along with the Christmas story told with sound effects by the children.  Especially welcoming to children, but all ages enjoy this service!)
7:00 p.m. Festive Eucharist
(A traditional celebration, with our chime choir!)
9:00 p.m.
(A traditional celebration, with our vocal choir!)
Sunday, December 25 - Christmas Day
9:00 a.m. A simple, quiet celebration of the Lord's Day on Christmas.
(Note: the following Sunday, New Year's Day, will have our usual schedule of 8:00 and 10:00 services.)
Youth Group to Carousel in Syracuse!
Sunday, December 4 is our next youth group event.  Because we had such fun last year, we're doing it again...the St. Mark's Youth Group (for 7th-12th graders) is going to the Carousel Mall (a.k.a. DestiNY) in Syracuse to shop and eat.  Here's a chance to do some Christmas shopping!  We'll leave after church, at about 11:30, and get back in the late afternoon.
St. Mark's Christmas Table
The Christmas Edition of the St. Mark's Table will be on Tuesday, December 13 at 6 p.m.  We'll begin as usual with a potluck meal in the undercroft (bring food to share and your tableware), and after we eat, we will gather in the church sanctuary.  Paula Giroux will be at the organ to lead us in singing Christmas carols.  It's always festive!
What's Up With the Book Club
For December, we will discuss Breakfast With Buddha, by Roland Merullo, a spiritual fictional novel written with gentle humor.  The story is narrated by Otto Ringling, a confirmed skeptic, who reluctantly goes on a road trip to North Dakota with Volya Rinpoche, a Siberian spiritual guru.  In six days on the road with an enigmatic holy man, Otto has the remarkable opportunity to see his world -- and more important, his life -- through someone else's eyes.  We will meet at Denny's on Monday, December 5 at 1:00 p.m.  All are welcome to attend.
