What's New...

Good evening,

In our last newsletter to you, we asked for your help in contacting State Representatives in the Iowa House. We ran into opposition from a subcommittee that views people with addictive illness as expendable. Well, we do NOT accept that so we worked to get a similar bill introduced in the Iowa Senate. That bill was introduced in a subcommitee and it passed unanimously! We now have a good chance that Iowa State Senators will have the opportunity to debate and vote on the bill, SF410, a bill to grant access to families for the overdose antidote, Narcan (or Naloxone), with a companion Good Samaritan bill. Families who lost a loved one to overdose know all too well that having Naloxone available could have saved their loved one had someone called 9-1-1 and/or had access to a Naloxone kit. This is what we are trying to accomplish because we want people with addictive illnesses to have the chance to live. There is no 2nd chance if they are not saved from an overdose, so we work to save lives.

Right now, your help is needed to get this done. On our website at Quad Cities Harm Reduction, we've set up a way to email the Senators that will be debating the bill this Thursday, March 19. Go there now and send the emails as written or write your own personal story.

We are going to Des Moines this Thursday, March 19 to talk to elected officials face-to-face to tell our stories. If you would like to join us, call Kim Brown at: 563-349-2434. We need as many families to attend as we can gather so we're organizing carpooling for anyone who wants to go. Your stories are so important and will serve as a lesson to lawmakers in how the overdose epidemic is affecting Iowa lives. If not Iowa families, who will do it for us?
