 SPOTLIGHT ON SCOTLAND
~

For our first newsletter of 2023 we thought we would start at the top with a feature on our new luxury walking tour – Scotland Sea to Skye.

Arrive by train or plane into Inverness and let us transfer you to charming Nairn on the east coast with its fishing port and extensive beach.  Your first day’s walk will take you through lovely countryside to Cawdor Castle which Shakespeare chose as the setting of Macbeth. The next three days take you along Loch Ness with a boat trip, a castle to explore and some lovely walking along The Great Glen Way with plenty of stunning views over the Loch and a choice of high or low level walks.

Then it’s time for something completely different as your driver guide will meet you in Fort Augustus for a trip to Eilean Donan Castle on the west coast and over the Skye Bridge for a fascinating tour of this lovely Island, immortalised in the Skye Boat song that tells the story of how Bonnie Prince Charlie disguised as a maid escaped with the aid of Flora Macdonald after the defeat of the Jacobite rising in 1745.

Spend a day exploring the Isle of Skye on foot before a very special last day that takes you back to the mainland by ferry and on the famous Jacobite Steam train through stunning Highland country and across the Glenfinnan viaduct to Fort William.

We could wax lyrical for days about Scotland – but have restricted ourselves to some little gems that you might find interesting before you visit!

Slainte Mhath!
  THE JACOBITE
Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, the train makes an 84 mile round trip journey from Fort William in the shadow of Britain’s highest mountain - Ben Nevis, to the fishing port of Mallaig where the boats go over to Skye.  Featured as the Hogwart’s Express in Harry Potter, not surprisingly the train gets very busy, so to take this trip you will need to book early!

  TARTAN TALES
Synonymous with Scotland, tartan is a traditional wool fabric woven to give the distinctive cross pattern and coloured with locally available dyes.  Although banned after the Battle of Culloden in 1745, the romantic novels of Sir Walter Scott and later Royal patronage brought it back into popularity. However, it was only in the mid 1800s that the different regional patterns were associated with Scottish Clans! Visit Chisholms in Inverness for a huge range.

No visit to Loch Ness would be complete without an attempt to see Nessie The Loch Ness Monster!  Whilst the earliest report of a strange creature in the water appears in 565 AD, the story really gained traction in the 1930s with the first photograhps that were taken of the beast.  Some of these have been proven to be fakes but some have not…

  SAVOURING SKYE
As well as its wonderful scenery Skye is becoming a bit of a foodie haven, and despite its small size there are a lot of wonderful local producers, including the 16 seat Michelin * restaurant Loch Bay  and creative menu at The Three Chimneys.  The oldest working distillery on Skye is Talisker and offers tours and tastings of its sweet, full bodied single malt.
