ABOUT "LEILA KHALED" (THE WOMAN AND THE FILM)
LEILA KHALED, THE WOMAN:
Leila Khaled has been dubbed "the poster girl of the Palestinian struggle". Khaled's image flashed across the world after she hijacked a passenger jet in 1969 and made world history by becoming the first woman to hijack an airplane. The picture of a young, determined looking woman with a checkered kuffiyah scarf, clutching an AK-47, was as era-defining as that of Che Guevara, Ruth First and other political figures from our recent past. Click here for a Guardian Newspaper interview with Leila Khaled.

LEILA KHALED, THE FILM: As a Palestinian child growing up in Sweden, filmmaker Lina Makboul admired Leila Khaled for her bold actions. However, as an adult, Makboul began asking complex questions about the legacy created by her childhood hero, Leila Khaled. This fascinating documentary is at once a portrait of Leila Khaled, an exploration of the filmmaker (Lina Makboul's) own understanding of her Palestinian identity, and a complicated examination of the nebulous dichotomy between "terrorist" and "freedom fighter." "When I was confined and restricted. I got my inspiration from the very knowledge…that our struggle is an international struggle for the dignity of humanity…just that knowledge alone that we belong to a family of humanity in a society where we have been completely rejected by a minority…this alone sustains you."
- Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, 1980
