Over the last few of months the newsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk email address has been receiving anything up to 100 spam emails a day from China. The flow does not seem to be slowing, therefore, with immediate effect the email address for the newsletter is changed to bpsnewsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk |
Projected Image Competition - Round 1
|
Last Wednesday saw the first round of the Projected Image Competition, which was judged by BPS husband & wife team of Sue O'Connell ARPS EFIAP/g DPAGB BPE4* and Peter Brisley ARPS DPAGB. Luckily there were no disagreements between them and they produced an evening that was enjoyed by all; Sue being extremely helpful to the Club and Intermediate sections and Peter managing to intersperse a hefty amount of humour into his critique of the Advanced and Themed sections. Some of the keener eyed among you will have noticed some new "Private Parking" bays that have recently appeared on the road servicing our estate. These have been introduced to deter commuters who use Montpelier Railway Station and leave their cars all day in the estate, which is private. As this is not something aimed at occupants of the estate, you are free to use these bays to park when attending BPS |
This Really Is The Final Call For Prints
|
Further to the following item that has appeared in the last few issues of the newsletter, we still don't really have enough prints to form a decent sized pool from which to select our entry for this PAGB competition. There is a definite lack of prints that have won awards (places or HCs) over the last year or so, which is disappointing; It would be really great if we could see some, or all, of these! If you have any hidden gems that have not seen the light of day before, they would also be gratefully received. You have until 4 October to pop your prints into the box at the front.
BPS has agreed to be one of the two clubs to represent the WCPF at this year’s PAGB Inter-club Print Championship, full details can be found here. The event takes place on 29 October at Blackburn and two clubs from each Federation plus last year’s top eight will take part. For the first round we have to submit 12 pictures. These must include a minimum of five monochrome, five colour, but not more than three Natural History prints. They must be from a minimum of five photographers with no member having more than four prints in the entry. The top eight clubs in the first round will go through to the final, which will require 15 pictures. We are therefore asking members for prints so that we can form an image bank, from which our final entry can be selected. If you would like to submit work, please hand to Peter McCloskey or Danny Heaton. |
Probably most of you would not have known Bob Ford by name, but he joined BPS in March of this year. Sadly Bob died suddenly last week, so our sympathies go to his family. The funeral will be at St Peter's Church, Filton on Monday 9 October at 2.15 |
The RPS are running a competition, called the Membership Card Competition, which has now reached the shortlist stage and votes are being sought to determine the overall winner. The images in the shortlist can be found by following this link. Please have a look and place your vote, as two of the images are by BPS members Sue O'Connell and John Hudson. Please follow the link and place your votes, it would be really great to see a BPS name at the top of the pile! |

New Gallery Opens In Bristol
|
Acclaimed Bristol documentary photographer, Martin Parr, is opening a new gallery in Bristol. The gallery is housed in the latest extension to the Paintworks,
off the Bath Road, it will also be a space to exhibit Parr’s growing
collection of works by selected British and Irish photographers and
images taken in the British Isles by foreign photographers.
Parr is famous for his documentary photography of life in the UK and
further afield. High-profile recent projects include creating a series
of video idents for BBC One.

A Day in The Life Of Bristol
|
Following the success of the 'A Day In The Life of Bristol' social experiment which took place last month; the 1,500 captured images of Bristol in a single day are to be used to create a new celebration of the best thing to come out of Bristol.
Artist Nathan Wyburn is asking which Bristolian legend, landmark, brand or icon you think deserves to be commemorated in a giant piece of artwork planned for Bristol’s city centre?
They're creating a poll to let the public decide but need your ideas for the shortlist. Who or what do you think deserves to make the cut?

The circus is coming to town! Moscow State Circus will be on Durdham Down from 4 to 15 October with a special "Circus of Horrors" on 14 Oct. Full details here.
John Hudson tells me that they are very amenable to photographers, with the one proviso that there is no flash used. He also says that you should try to get seats opposite the artistes entrance (either side of the public entrance), try to get half way up the raked seating for the best view.

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
