From the Church Guy
     My car nags me.

If I have the temerity to start driving without fastening my seat belt instantly, it gets into a mood.  First it starts beeping relentlessly.  Then, if I don't respond in five seconds, it beeps faster and faster, like a countdown to a bomb going off or a rocket launch.

I know, I know, it's a safety feature and reminder.  I know that, and I gladly wear the seatbelt.  But the car does nag impatiently.

Sometimes I wish God would do that.  If it's been too long since I've prayed, I wish I would hear a voice becoming more and more insistent: "Pray...pray...PRAY...PRAY, PRAY, PRAY!"  Or, if I forget how I'm treating others, I wish I would hear, "Be kind...be kind...BE KIND! BE KIND!"

But God is not a nag.  Apparently, God is interested in seeing me be grown up spiritually, and take responsibility for words, attitudes and actions.  God seems to think freedom is a pretty neat idea.  So I guess I have to respect myself, and the choices I make, since God does.

Still, I guess I'm glad my car nags me.

Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma
     Dear St. Mark's Family,

We're taking part in "Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma" on June 7.  Would you please consider making a gift to our team St. Mark's Chenango Bridge?  Your gift will make a huge impact on the lives of those individuals who are affected by scleroderma.

If you are joining the walk - please join team 'St. Mark's Chenango Bridge'.  You can donate on-line (using the website below - be sure to donate to the St. Mark's Chenango Bridge Team), or you can turn in a donation to St. Mark's (please write "Scleroderma Walk in memory of Judy" on the memo line).

Your donation and spreading the word means a great deal to us and thousands of scleroderma patients.  All donations are in memory of our dear friend, Judy Peterson.

Many thanks, in advance, for your support!

Sincerely,

Stacey and Lauren Gridley

P.S. For more information about the Scleroderma Foundation, please visit www.scleroderma.org.

 Lisa is getting ordained
Our seminary intern for the past academic year, Lisa Busby, now has an official ordination date: Saturday, June 6.

Although she is called to be a priest, in our tradition clerics are first ordained to the "transitional diaconate".  (This is not quite the same as being a permanent deacon). Then, probably about six months later, she hopes to be ordained a priest.

Lisa will be ordained by Bishop Skip Adams in her home parish, Grace and Holy Spirit Church, 13 Court Street in Cortland (not far from the county courthouse).  The service will be at 5:00 p.m., and will be followed by a reception.

Lisa invites all the people of St. Mark's to this service.  As a parish, you have taught her a great deal and have been a community of formation for her.  She loves the people of St. Mark's and expresses her gratitude for your continuing graciousness to her.

We have learned much from Lisa, and we pray for (and expect) a wonderful ordained ministry for her in the Episcopal Church!  As this newsletter is being prepared, she is in the process of interviewing and discerning her next steps in service to the church.

 4th- 6th Grade Overnight
A date has been selected for an overnight for 4th-6th graders  - Friday, June 19 beginning at 7 p.m. and ending at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.  Come and join us for fun and games, an outreach project, a movie, and food.  Bring a sleeping bag, pillow, pj's, toiletries, and a snack to share.  A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board at the side entance.  We need at least 6 children to hold the overnight.  We also need a parent or two.   Hope this date works for everyone!
