Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 20 November

Next Wednesday 20 November we welcome Drew Forsyth to BPS. Drew is a Commercial, Advertising and Dance Photographer based in Manchester, and his talk is entitled ‘What it takes to photograph a Ballerina’, which draws on his ten years of experiences working with dancers at the very highest level.

He has worked with clients & artists from every corner of the world, including dancers from The Royal Ballet, Scottish Ballet, and Norwegian Ballet. His work has taken him all over the world, photographing cast members of The Lion King on Broadway on a rooftop in New York, Kanye West’s backing dancers in Los Angeles, and Scottish Ballet’s Principal in Glencoe, Scotland.
Drew’s talk will focus on what he has learnt over this time shooting dance, as well as showing out-takes, behind the scenes images, and never before seen photographs from his archive.

PAGB Inter-club Print Competition
Following on from the report (Issue 358) on our success at the recent PAGB Inter-club Print Competition at Blackburn where we came 7th overall, I've now found a picture of representatives of the top 8 clubs with their awards, which includes our esteemed External Competition Secretary, Pete McCloskey.

Correction
A couple of weeks ago, following his talk at the clubrooms, Mike Martin provided a pdf giving instruction on how to adjust images. Unfortunately, he omitted the very last part (spotted by an eagle-eyed Steve Bridgen). The revised instructions are attached to this newsletter.

Photography Course
This year's Photography Course came to an end this week, with the traditional end of Course competition. Although numbers were down slightly on previous years, Jeff (Hargreaves) tells me that they were probably one of the best crowds that we have had and that overall the course was a resounding success. Below are the top images as judged by Barry Mead.

Competition to Enter
The Ridgeway – the oldest road in Britain – historically was a trackway providing a reliable trading route from the Dorset coast along the chalk Downs to the Wash in Norfolk. Today it is not only the oldest road but is also a wonderful resource for all the communities that live along its route, where all can enjoy walking, riding or just being there.

The Friends of The Ridgeway have established an annual arts competition and prize – the Swire Ridgeway Arts Prize. For 2020, it will be held in April 2020 with an exhibition in Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall, Uffington on Saturday and Sunday 18 – 19 April 2020 and a second exhibition in the Chilterns the following weekend. The aim of the competition is to bring The Ridgeway to life not only as a long distance trail but also as an artistic inspiration, and to show The Ridgeway, its history and environs, in all their aspects throughout all seasons. The theme of the competition is ‘Spirit of the Ridgeway’.

The main points of the prize competition are:
  • There will be separate classes for painting, sculpture (including ceramics and textiles) , photography and writing (poetry or prose);
  • Competition is open to all, amateur and professional artists;
  • Artwork submitted must be produced in the 24 months prior to closing date;
  • The results of the competition will be announced, and prizes awarded at the Ridgeway Friends Day planned for 19 April 2020;
  • The closing date for entries shall be one month prior to the Ridgeway Friends Day (i.e. 19 March 2020);
  • The full rules of the competition are given in a separate document.
All entrants will receive one year’s membership of The Friends of The Ridgeway Each category winner will receive a keeper prize plus £100.  The overall winner will receive a keeper prize plus £250 and a trophy.

To enter applicants should contact The Friends of The Ridgeway. Entrants need to complete the Entry Form and submit it with their art work.

Why not seek artistic inspiration from the Ridgeway and then, through the Swire Ridgeway Arts Prize, share it with all those that love and value the Ridgeway?

From potato substituted for ice cream, to painted raw turkeys, images of food have been tampered with throughout the industry for years. Esther will show you the best way to work and help you with gaining portfolio shots for when you work on the real thing and how to ensure you are prepared for working commercially at Christmas. We will have a full set up for you

Wild Arena|Macro moth photography Canon
Tuesday 10 December, 10am - 1pm OR 2pm - 5pm £30
These nocturnal creatures are a great way to learn macro-wildlife photography.
During the workshop, Wild Arena will present and demonstrate the fundamentals of macro photography and capturing stunning shots of wildlife close up.

We will cover a variety of topics including:
  • The choice & use of macro lenses
  • Keeping things in focus
  • The creative use of depth-of-field
  • Managing movement in the images with shutter speeds.
You will then have the chance to put these techniques into practice and get up close and capture these intricate insects. The moths will be displayed under photographic lighting and woodland dioramas, creating a real-world look indoors.
The sessions are ideally suited to customers using DSLR/Mirrorless cameras and we usually have some demonstration lenses available to try out on the day if you do not already own one.
With group sizes of a maximum of 12 delegates and the convenient and comfortable setting of Unit13, these days are great value for those photographers wishing to develop their skills in macro and close-up.

Full details on all of these workshops can be found here
