RALPH IRIZARRY & LOS VIEJOS DE LA SALSA
Viejos Pero Sabrosos
BKS Records / CD ONLY $12.99
Originally released: 2012
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: Man! Veteran timbalero supreme, Mr. Ralph Irizarry, is back with an absolute hand-grenade of salsa dura. Irizarry, for you newbies out there, has played timbales for a who's-who of salsa and Latin jazz icons including Ray Barretto, Larry Harlow, Yomo Toro, Gerardo Rosales, Paoli Mejias and many others. Aside from his own, highly regarded, bands Son Café and Timbalaye, he's widely known as the timbalero for Rubén Blades' bands since the mid '80s up to, and including, the recent, fabulous, Todos Vuelven live concerts.
Viejos Pero Sabrosos is a relentless wave of fist-in-the-air salsa: a powerful statement about salsa musicians transcending time and becoming ever more potent with age. It's an homage to the players of the past (Reunión Celestial sings the praises of the Fania All Stars) and an affirmation of the current elder generation's power and sabor (Como El Vino). This is a band made up of players who no longer have anything to prove, as they've kicked ass so many countless times in the past. Here, within this new Los Viejos formation, they're playing solely for the love of it. I'll mention but a few members: Eddie Montalvo and José ‘Pepe’ Espinosa on congas, pianists Edy Martínez, Ricky González and Mike Eckroth, trombonist Reynaldo Jorge, bassist Rubén Rodríguez, trumpeters Nelson "Gazú" Jaime and Elias Lopes ...and other members of the salsa elite. The lead singers are none other than Venezuela's Marcial Isturiz (Bailatino, Descarga Criolla, La Negramenta, Rumberos del Calejón) and New York's own legendary singer/percussionist José Mangual Jr. (Héctor Lavoe, Willie Colón, Son Boricua, Mario Bauzá, etc.). Coro? They are Willie Ruiz, José ‘Pepito’ Gómez, Joseph ’Quique’ González, Eddie Rosado, and Héctor ‘Papote’ Jiménez.
My suggestion, folks, is to get this one but fast. Viejos Pero Sabrosos is a shoo-in for the Best of 2012 list. A Big DJ Alert and Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

ALFREDO RODRIGUEZ
Sounds Of Space
Mack Avenue / CD
Originally released: 2012
Category: LATIN JAZZ; LATIN JAZZ
EditorsPick: “Mack Avenue seems to have the market cornered on impressive debut releases with Alfredo Rodriguez as one of the most impressive debuts since Gonzalo Rubalcaba's  1987 debut Concierto Negro. Artistic credibility is a virtual lock with the release Sounds of Space having been co-produced by the legendary Quincy Jones…The virtuoso talent of Rodriguez is literally off the charts. At certain points there is a distinct feel of a piano duet performed on solo piano. There is an incredibly organic quality to Sounds Of Space which is maintained consistently despite a marvelous textured appeal of melody and lyrical development. Artistically gifted and a technical wizard finds Alfredo Rodriguez as the future of modern jazz whose musical stock is an arrow pointing straight up. Being a critic is far more than taking a critical approach, it is about being a jazz advocate. Look under every possible rock and you would be hard pressed to find fault in this virtually flawless recording.” Brent Black, Criticaljazz.com (DR)

PRINCE ROYCE
Phase II
Top Stop/Atlantic / CD
Originally released: 2012
Category: POP/OTHER; POP LATIN
EditorsPick: ...Broad success is not new to Royce, whose 2010 bilingual cover of Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” was a multinational, multigenerational hit. “Phase II” pulls in a wide swath of listeners, yes, by mixing Spanish- and English-language tracks, but there are other methods, too. “Addicted” starts out sounding like a Jason Mraz ballad until a conga rhythm comes in about a minute into the song. Lead single “Las Cosas Pequenas” presents as a standard radio R&B tune until the bachata elements come in and Royce starts singing about the little things that make a relationship special. All of the mixing and matching not only expands the definition of bachata, a genre with roots in the Dominican Republic, but the other styles that are folded in as well. - Sarah Godfrey, The Washington Post (DR)

LA LUPE
Puro Teatro: A Lady And Her Music, 2-CD Set
Fania Codigo / CD
Originally released: 2010
Category: LATIN SOUL/BOOGALOO; LATIN SOUL, CLASSIC 60s or 70s
EditorsPick: By far, the ultimate compilation of the music of La Yi Yi Yi, spanning decades, Cuba and New York, the labels Discuba and Tico, Fania and her later work with El Rey, Tito Puente. 55 tracks!
Here's an excerpt from the excellent liner notes by Matt Rogers... “I think people like me,” the legendary La Lupe told Look magazine in 1971, “because I do what they’d like to but can’t get free enough to do.” True, some would say La Yi Yi Yi—one of the most electrifying singers to ever blitz Planet Earth—was a free spirit incarnate; others would say she was simply possessed. Literally. No surprise, given the voluptuous vocalist’s onstage inclination to bounce off walls, tear away her clothes, throw shoes and jewelry at her band, and claw, bite, and scratch herself, all the while continually belting tunes with orgasmic heat, all as if in a trance. “I sing with delirium!” she once sang, and she did, turning each song into a full-fledged drama. Some criticized her for dressing like a streetwalker, while others embraced her bold sexuality. Her performances onstage and on wax reflected her tumultuous life offstage and were indeed—like the name of one of her most famous songs—puro teatro. (DR)

EDDIE PALMIERI
Justice / Justicia
Fania Codigo / CD
Originally released: 1969
Reissued: 2012
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA: CLASSIC 1960s or 1970s NEW YORK
EditorsPick: "Classic Palmieri work exhibiting R&B tendencies and the accompaniment of one of his best bands." (Rudolph Mangual, 98/99 Catalog)
Here's an excerpt from the excellent liner notes by Aurora Flores... A transitional period for both “El Rumbero Del Teclado” Eddie Palmieri and the society that was changing, 1969 marked historical timelines that transformed nations. Hundreds of thousands were already taking to the streets in protest of a controversial war. Woodstock became the counter culture concert with half a million hippies and flower children taking center stage on the news. Richard Nixon was elected President while Easy Rider premiered in the movies. The NY Mets won the World Series while the black Brazilian, “Pelé” made worldwide headlines. 747 jets made their debut in the skies. The Beatles released their last recording together while John & Yoko conducted a “bed-in” for the media. Jennifer Lopez was born 1969, the same year that NASA put the first man on the moon. Back on earth, a young Eddie Palmieri was tormented. Featured on the left hand cover of this groundbreaking recording wearing a knit sweater, cross-legged with his head in his hands, Eddie gives us music that comes from this time of transition. A thinking man’s musician, Eddie was one of the first to enter the penitentiaries bringing free music to the forgotten. He marched with Cesar Chavez and played benefits for his and many other organizations. He was among the first to record live from the student campus of the University Puerto Rico and played many fund-raisers for activists that had an impact on an awakening Latino community. While the swing and funky dance formats remain intact, Eddie takes us one step further nurturing our minds with messages of activism within the soul quenching musical waters that in this recording, also remind us of our history in both Puerto Rico and Cuba with Rafael Hernandez’ “Amor Ciego” and Ignacio Piñero’s “Lindo Yambu”... Rumberos Del Callejon / CD
Originally released: 2012

EditorsPick: That's right, folks, a NEW release by one of the famed figures of classic '70s salsa. Flautist Urbina had a handful of terrific records in the '70s on the West Side label (now part of Fania), most notably Llego La Revolucion and the followup Revolucion En N.Y. , that are now highly prized by collectors and DJs. His Revolucion 70 was one of the better, more adventurous, salsa bands in New York of that period. They generated great grooves and garnered support by special guests. LATROPA SON
La Mañana America
Latropa Son / CD
Originally released: 2012
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: Now here's a very fine timba-salsa release from the West Coast. With all original material by bassist Liván Montoya, La Mañana America is a sack full of smoldering embers from the get-go. Opening with a rootsy Cuban rumba, a good attention grabber, Latropa Son leads you, without haste, into a set of first rate dance material full of modern timba touches, yet maintains a deep, nuanced, sabor. The band, formed in 2010, keeps the momentum intact, helped by a cadre of superb singers: Osvaldo Carvajal, Nobel Cintra Cascaret, Edgardo Cambón, Amilcar Garcia, Juan Stable, Fito Reinoso, and Sulkary Valverde (who does some amazing work on the pristine Navegando - listen to that). There are some other styles peppered about, ie the cha cha chá Amor de Cha, as well as touches of urbano, reggae, pop -- but the band has, most definitely, an Afro-Cuban timba heart that beats strong. Check out La Onda and the highly swinging, jazzy, Rezo Nuevo. Really, unusually sophisticated stuff for a debut release. I think these guys have a bright future ahead of them. Very Highly Recommended. (BP)

ALFREDO LINARES
Salsa... A Todo Sabor
Repsychled/Lion / CD
Originally released: 1972
Reissued: 2012
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA; PERU
EditorsPick: Peruvian pianist Alfredo "Sabor" Linares is a legend—a cult figure—long recognized throughout Latin America as one of the creators of salsa music. He started out recording Afro Latin jazz in the late 60s, with two solo LPs and guest piano and arrangement work for both Coco Lagos and El Combo de Pepe. In the early 70s, he moved to Cali in Colombia, and became heavily involved in what developed into the Salsa scene. Fast forward to 2007: Linares' profile was given a boost outside of Latin America following guest piano appearances on the Quantic Soul Orchestra recordings and his show-stopping performances in their accompanying live shows. Linares' records have been published in several countries, and on many, many labels... although not always under his name. Case in point, Linares' "Salsa a Todo Sabor..." album: it was recorded in late 1972 for the IEMPSA label in Peru, and released by them in 1973; it was also released in Colombia that same year; but in the U.S. it was released (by the Audio Latino label) under the name of Madison Orchestra, and re-titled: "A Lot of Salsa—Rhythm in the Alley," with a new cover, and with two tracks removed. Not at all confusing. And the music? ...a scorching combination of danceable Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban music. The rhythms of boogaloo and Latin soul are there in profusion, with the piano and bass carrying the groove. Then the rhythm changes: from boogaloo to salsa, as well as to guaracha and guaguancó. It's no exaggeration to say that the Latin percussion style of a handful of albums like this one certainly had an impact on the creation of the New York salsa scene, and the trio of trumpets adds a Puerto Rican flavor. Three singers deliver the knockout punch: Panchito Nalmy, Rolo Bernal, and Koky Palacios, singing in the style of Fania. Around the same time he recorded the "Salsa a Todo Sabor…" album, Linares recorded the 45rpm single: 'Yo no soy guapo' (I am not handsome) / 'Sujetate la lengua' (Hold on language); both sides of this... JORGE ALBERTO
A Bailar En Nueva York
Mala Records / CD
Originally released: 2012
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA
EditorsPick: This second album by Jorge Alberto “El Gallito del Son,” entitled A Bailar en Nueva York, is dedicated to the roots of Cuban son, which gave birth to modern day salsa. A Bailar en Nueva York features tracks with infectious choruses and melodies, including the song Julian, written and composed by Alexis Valdes of the Mega TV show, Esta Noche Tonight. The title track from “El Gallito’s” first album, Mi Tumbao, is included in this production, arranged in the style of a traditional, danceable son montuno. Donde esta mi Guayabera is a lively, tongue-in-cheek song extolling the virtues of coffee bean harvesting. The Guayabera is a style of shirt traditionally worn by Cubans to collect coffee beans and other harvested produce. Aqui en Mi Pueblo, made famous by the Puerto Rican salsa singer Andy Montanez, pays homage to composer Miguel Angel Amadeo and features El Gallito's unique sonero vocals. (label) (BP)
