Wednesday 12 April

Next Wednesday we welcome Alison Webber FRPS to BPS. Alison is a photographer based in Dorset, and the following is taken from her website:

My photographic journey began in 2016 whilst on holiday in Canada and it is fair to say that I have been passionate about photography ever since. To start with I was a landscape photographer who  meticulously planned outings, closely monitoring the weather forecast then setting out with a large rucksack and tripod in the hope of catching a blazing sunrise or sunset.
However, after a while I came to realise that the most interesting photos I took were of scenes which I simply stumbled across. So I now head out with just my camera (usually in my pocket) and take photos of whatever I find interesting and appealing.
My style of photography has continued to evolve and in 2018 I fell in love with monochrome photography. Passionate about black and white photography, I have created an extensive portfolio of work which illustrates my individual style. I use textures, patterns, reflections and shadows to highlight the interaction between shapes and light while at the same time trying to create well defined compositions and maintain a harmonious contrast between light and dark.

PDI Competition - Errata
LEAGUE TABLE CORRECTION

Due to a transcription error (for which the PDI Competition Secretary apologises) Simon Caplan's score and league position in the Bi-Monthly League Table were wrongly reported. Simon's total score in the Advanced section should read 6 points, putting him in equal 4th position, not equal 7th.

DI Group Meeting - Advance Notice for 17 April, 7.30 pm

The next DI Group meeting is on Monday 17 April, which is only ten days away. The meeting is open to all BPS members. This is a gentle reminder to all members that it is an ideal opportunity to share your images with fellow members to show what you have been working on achieving success or near success in whatever way you enjoy making images. In recent meetings constructive comments by experienced members have been appreciated by all, especially those who have gained an extra edge for their images. If you are preparing for club competitions or other salons, you may want to get a second opinion at the DI meeting from your fellow members or just enjoy showing off your work and experiments in an informal atmosphere.

When you are ready, please email your images for presentation to reach me no later than 6pm Sunday 16 April. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). If you wish to show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox if convenient, but I am not equipped to receive them by direct transfers from Google or Apple Mac systems.

Distinctions Advice Workshops
The first of the above workshops will take place at Unit 13 on Monday 24 April, starting at 19:30. The advice will be given by Pete McCloskey FRPS and Andrew Marker FRPS.

This initial workshop will be aimed at prints only and for members thinking of an RPS distinction. Although aimed at RPS any advice will clearly be useful if you are thinking of submitting for a PAGB Distinction.

Future workshops will be scheduled and will vary in content, including advice on PAGB Distinctions and digital submissions.

If you are interested in this first workshop please get in touch making sure that you include all three of the following:
Thanks
Ralph

John Chamberlin
Last Wednesday John Chamberlin was made an Honorary Life Member of BPS, for those who missed the meeting, the following summarises what was said:

About 45 years ago John joined BPS as a fresh faced and young(ish) photographer. However, it was not very long before he began to take an active role in the Society and very soon began the long list of official posts that he was to hold over the following years, these included:
  • Print Competition Secretary
  • External Competitions Secretary
  • Society Secretary
  • Programme Secretary
  • Deputy Chairman
  • Chairman
  • President
In addition to these official posts, he also found time to serve on the Salon Committee for 12 years and also sat on the judging panel on no fewer than 13 occasions, most recently this year.

More recently, up until we left West Mall, he co-ran the print mentoring evenings for 6 years, which were set up to help and guide members who wanted to join the road to photographic distinctions. Since we moved to the new clubrooms in 2016, he hasn’t actually held any official posts but has continued to give his advice and encouragement freely to anyone who needed it to help them on their way along the distinctions route and it can be safely said that a large percentage of those members who have successfully gained letters after their names owe a huge debt of gratitude to him.

On a broader front, he has always been the first to support the Society in outside events and his images and prints have helped us to a fair number of podium places in external competitions over the years.

We are delighted to say the Council have unanimously agreed to publicly recognise his services to BPS and to make John an Honorary Life Member of the Society.

He continues to be a great supporter of and ambassador for BPS and photography in general, even if he’s not quite so fresh faced and young looking as he was 45 years ago!

President, BPS

External Competitions - Only Mono
You will have seen from last week’s newsletter that this competition was being held in Port Talbot last Saturday.

Well, we WON, beating 32 other clubs nationally!

The competition was a masterclass in judging by John Tilsley from Dorchester and it was a nail-biting finish. Although there were 4 rounds, those images in consideration for the top marks were ‘held back’. After dividing the ‘held back’ images into those scoring 19 and those scoring 20, there was a 3 way tie between ourselves, Tenby and Bridgend and District.
  • John reviewed all four images from each of the tied clubs.
  • Tenby dropped to third having only one image in the ‘held back’ top group, whilst we and Bridgend had two.  That left us and Bridgend with identical scores for all four images
  • John said he couldn’t separate us based on the top two images that had been held, each club having one 20 and one 19
  • looking at the 18 and 17 he considered those to be equivalent in quality, so the decision came down to a subjective one, with ourselves winning on the greater range of subjects / variation in our set.
Well done everyone whose work we used and everyone else who has over the last couple of years produced Mono work giving us an excellent pool of images to select from.

Below are our successful prints, together with their scores:

Better start working on Mono images for next year Smile
