Subject: Management of Alarm Systems in Process Industries
Alarm ManagementIn June-2009, both ISA and ANSI formally approved ANSI/ISA-18.2-2009, Management of Alarm Systems in the Process Industries. The question now is, What does this mean for me?
ISA-18.2 is the next stage in an ongoing process of increasing safety, reliability, and visibility on the plant floor.  The new standard complements the already well-established EEMUA 191 guidelines for Alarm Systems.  While EEMUA is focused on benchmarks and metrics, ISA 18.2 establishes clear standards for the overall Lifecycle of Alarm Management with the expectation of a fundamental change in the ways businesses operate their plants.  It is expected that this new standard will impact regulatory and reporting requirements in the near future, with particular emphasis on the following industries: Oil & Gas, Power, Nuclear, Commodity Chemicals, Petrochemical & Refining, Mining & Minerals, Pharmaceuticals, Food & Beverage, Pulp & Paper, and Discrete Manufacturing.
Speaker: Bradley Cook  -  Business Development Manager  -  Matrikon Inc.

President's Message - Welcome to 2010

President's Message - Send Your FeedbackDear Members, Colleagues and Friends,

On behalf of the ISA Hamilton Section executive we wish all our members a Happy New Year!  May 2010 bring the best of health, happiness and prosperity to you all.  This year is looking to very promising with EXPO 2010 in March, and our golf tournament in May.

On Jan 1, 2010,  Mike Bovenkamp, one of our ISA Hamilton executive members,  became the new District Vice President. Congratulations Mike! He is working tirelessly to put together the annual District 13 Leadership Conference in Montreal among the many other responsibilities this high level position in our society governance brings.

The advent of a new decade has brought along a lot of interesting ways in which people communicate. We have our cell phones, I-pods and that very useful USB connection in the forehead. You have seen the society Intech newsletter go electronic and most of our section correspondence is now electronic. With the everyday popularity of electronic media it is easy to lose the human touch that we so desperately need to complete the information we communicate. To this end I would like to see our members at the monthly member meetings or other section events. Please make an effort to attend a local event some time through the year. Your presence gives the executive a chance to communicate and know each other on a personal level rather than just as an email address.

Of course if you cannot attend in person I hope that everyone sees the continued value in the short e-News letter our web master Wally Nickel issues. They are done on a more frequent basis so that we can keep the membership appraised of the many new events and activities coming up in the section or society. I know some people have that delete before read attitude that usually accompanies the bombardment of ISA emails. To combat this malady our newsletter editor Jennifer Loeffler has been successful in issuing the hard copy Outlook version. She is continually evolving the Outlook format in the hope it stays interesting for our members that enjoy our information on that timeless medium.

Of course we appreciate feedback in any form whether email or snail mail. If you have any questions or comments about the ISA Hamilton Section, please feel free to contact me by email at our Hamilton Section office info@isahamilotn.com or by phone at 905-548-4204 or even by snail mail at the Hamilton Section postal address. I look forward to meeting with our Hamilton members at the next meeting of the season.

Best regards,
  Bob Popek
