Next week's speaker is Steve Russell from Chalford in Gloucestershire, who will be presenting his talk called African Adventure.
Steve has been fortunate over many years to have been able to photograph areas of Africa including, but not limited to, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya.
|
|
Steve's first trip to Africa in 2006 came at the invitation of his friends Rungwe Kingdon and Claude Koenig, founding directors of the Pangolin bronze foundry in Chalford, Gloucestershire who in 2004, established the Ruwenzori Sculpture Foundation in Uganda, a charitable body setting up to a local bronze-founding industry and to foster cultural and educational exchange between artists in Africa and the UK offering locals with educational workshops and a providing a much needed clinic.
Like so many of those who travel to Africa it proved a life-changing experience. He has returned several times in the intervening years, on each occasion venturing further afield, forging new relationships, and always expanding his archive of remarkable images. He has even hunkered down with a family of silverback gorillas, an experience that will stay with him forever.
Some of these images have been shortlisted and shown many times over the years, a few of which were:
Finalist In the Hasselblad Masters wildlife photographer of the year, he has had his images selected for National Geographics animal photographer of the year and Travel photographer of the year
Steve has published a book of African images titled Katonda Wenge that was launched at Pangolin London with the private view being attended among others, by the world-renowned photographer David Bailey.
Steve has also exhibited his work at, Campden Gallery, Royal West of England Academy, Nature in Art, Museum in the Park, Pangolin London, Gallery Pangolin, The Commonwealth Heads of Government, Kampala, Uganda and the Royal Geographical Society to name but a few. |

Didn't Receive Your Newsletter? |
Several members emailed me this week to bemoan the fact that they had not received their newsletter and as a result of which, didn't have the log in details for the Wednesday meeting. Can I please make several points here:
- Newsletters are always sent out by Saturday at the latest, if you haven't received yours by Sunday, email me (bpsnewsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk) and I will endeavour to send you a copy. But please check your spam or junk folders before contacting me to make sure it hasn't found its way in there.
- To view past editions of this Newsletter, including the latest one, please click on the following link and then select the date(s) you are looking for. This instruction is printed at the foot of EVERY newsletter.
- If you haven't done so already, please make sure that the email address bpsnewsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk is "white listed" or on your "safe senders list" in your email program (if you don't know how to do this, find the nearest 10year old, they can usually sort these things!).
- This week, those members who emailed me about this, did so shortly before the meeting was due to start. It was lucky that I was at home (I had decided to watch at home on Zoom myself), but normally I would be on my way to club at this time, so your pleas would go unanswered.
- Members should remember that links to ALL meetings are ALWAYS shown in the Members' Portal of the BPS website. If you don't know how to access the Members' Portal or are having difficulties in doing so, please see the end of this (and all) newsletters for instructions on logging in. If you have lost your password, you should click on Lost Your Password on the log in screen and follow the on-screen instructions

PSA Print Competitions
Follow our phenomenal success last year winning 4 of the five categories, BPS have again enrolled in these competitions: Large Colour; Small Colour; Large Mono; Small Mono and Creative/Altered Reality. Can we repeat our successes – we’ll find out the results of Round 1 mid December. For now our prints are (safely???) in the post off to the USA!
Round 2 closes 15 January so expect to be chased soon for images. In the meantime if anyone has any particular masterpieces you’d like to have considered, send some thumbnails to Mike Martin ( mike_martin@blueyonder.co.uk).
PSA PDI Competitions
BPS did well in this too, winning two categories and coming third in the last. So well in the Creative/Altered Reality sections (with members taking ALL the individual awards in the End of Year competition) that they have decided to discontinue the section! Instead we’ve entered the new Mono section along with Colour and Nature. Fingers crossed. As with Prints, Round 2 closes 15 January, but as entries can be loaded on line there is less immediacy.
GB Cup (PDI) – Nature and Open
GB Trophy (Prints) – Nature and Open
Closing date for both is – 11 January 2023. As with the PSA competitions above, post to the USA is the biggest concern – so expect to be hassled soon for entries (Prints A3 un-mounted – not returned)
WCPF – DPIC (PDI)
WCPF – Print Competition (resurrected for 2023)
Both competitions are to be held on the same day – 5 Feb 2023, closing date to be confirmed. Hopefully the above competitions will provide an adequate pool of images, but Mike is always receptive of new work. These competitions are important as they are qualifiers for the PAGB National Competitions. As finalists this year at Warwick we automatically get invited in 2023, so DPIC is really only relevant for bragging rights, but we need to finish first or second in the Print Battle to qualify for the National Competition in 2023 – Game on!

Salon acceptances:
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help). |
IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes |
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.
The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
DO NOT REPLY TO THE NEWSLETTER.
