Cesar Chavez Day(s) 2012
An American hero, César Chávez was a civil rights leader, crusader for nonviolent social change, and environmentalist who built a movement that reached far beyond the California farmland. Inspiring a nation to speak out for the rights of all poor working people, Chávez's birthday, March 31, is celebrated in California as a state holiday, intended to promote service to the community in honor of Chávez's life and work. During the week of César Chávez’s birthday, corporate and community volunteers will come together for unique fruitanthropy projects to honor the life and legacy of César Chávez. Under the direction of expert leaders from Food Forward, the volunteers will have the opportunity to convene at properties we have been invited to and harvest their excess fruits and vegetables, donating 100% to local food pantries across southern California. Community Day and Commemoration
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the community response to the conditions that led to the Los Angeles Civil Unrest of 1992, L.A. Works will be partnering with the South Los Angeles nonprofit organizations Community Build and Community Services Unlimited to continue our joint work to transform a vacant lot that was the site of a corner store which was destroyed during the riots. Like us on facebook and/or follow our twitter feed for updates on signing up for this April 28 project. If you work at a company interested in supporting such a project, we are looking for a sponsor for the event and new garden space – email info@laworks.com to request more information on corporate sponsorship opportunities.

Earth Day(s) of Service 2012
More than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world. From changing out light bulbs to eating local, every Act of Green helps reduce our footprint on the planet. This April, L.A. Works will be joining the movement once again as we organize a week of civic engagement opportunities for corporate and community members to celebrate Earth Day in collaboration with elementary and middle schools in the LA Unified School District. Throughout the past several years L.A. Works has partnered with corporations to build gardens at our local schools and community centers. Several of these gardens could use a little extra TLC. Throughout the week of April 22, volunteers will have the opportunity to help care for and maintain gardens across Los Angeles. Corporate sponsorship opportunities for businesses to contribute a fiscal donation to mobilize their employees to volunteer are currently available. Email info@laworks.com to request more information on corporate sponsorship opportunities. Like us on facebook and/or follow our twitter feed for updates on signing up for these events.

Call to Action

  Expanding our Popular Projects
Projects at the L.A. Food Bank and L.A. Family Housing are two of our most popular volunteer opportunities, often filling up well in advance. Now, thanks to L.A. Works’ new volunteer leader Lara Kose, volunteers will have an additional opportunity for sorting, shelving and stacking food donations at the L.A. Food Bank for distribution to agencies serving the hungry throughout Los Angeles. And thanks to new volunteer leader Crystal Vythu Lu, volunteers will have one more opportunity to spend time reading, playing and caring for the kids at L.A. Family Housing while parents get a well-deserved break.

  Let's Get Prepared, LA
Whenever there is a natural or man-made disaster, the outpouring of support from the community is tremendous. As you know, one of L.A. Works programs is our Emergency Readiness Program to assist the Los Angeles Community in mobilizing and managing spontaneous volunteers during a disaster. We’re not talking about first-response type support, rather the volunteers who package and distribute food or clothing, support nonprofits who are addressing the needs those most affected in the disaster, and more. We need your help to plan for L.A. Works’ role in a disaster and help lead the volunteers if time should ever come. Want to join the conversation? Email Becca.

Volunteer @ the Festival of Books
The Festival of Books began in 1996 with a simple goal: Bring together the people who create books and the people who love to read them. Since then the hugely popular Festival has become Southern California's major literary event. A little known fact … L.A. Works served as the official volunteer coordinator for the first several years of the Festival. This year’s Festival will be held on Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22 at USC's University Park Campus. The Festival’s success has been due in part to the generous assistance of volunteers who welcome attendees, assist with registration, staff author events, supervise book signings, staff information booths, and much MORE>>>
