From the Church Guy

     Gargoyles speak to me.

In case you missed it, I spent my entire sermon on February 12 on gargoyles.  The sermon is still on our website, stmarks-cb.org.  It was the most fun I've had preaching a sermon in YEARS.

Andy Pierce and I have donated two gargoyles, appropriately stained to match the woodwork in church, for installation on the balcony wall.  Gargoyles have a fascinating history in church architecture.

No one is completely sure what they meant when they were first carved on cathedral walls in the early Middle Ages.  There are a number of theories, but my favorite is that they are a reminder to human beings to take ourselves less seriously, even in the holiest of places.

The Gospel of the Gargoyles is simple: Don't forget to have fun, even in church!

Watch out...the St. Mark's Gargoyles will soon be on their perches.

 Summer in February

Grey winter days getting you down?  Cabin fever setting in?  Come celebrate "Summer in February".  On Saturday, February 8, we'll get together to share a meal and have some fun.  Come and have a burger or a hotdog.  Bring your favorite summer side dish or dessert to share.  There will be food and fun for all.

Here's What We Are Reading in Book Club

Our selection this month is BEHIND THE BEAUTIFUL FOREVERS by Katherine Boo.  Named one of the ten best books of the year by numerous publications, this powerful story is a landmark work of narrative fiction, based on three year's research, that tells the dramatic and sometimes heartbreaking story of families striving toward a better life in one of the twenty-first century's great, unequal cities.  Annawadi is a makeshift settlement in the shadow of luxury hotels near the Mumbai airport.  As India starts to prosper, we follow the lives of some residents as they strive to pull themselves up out of poverty.

Youth Group Eating More Pizza

Sunday, February 2, is Groundhog Day  It's also the Feast of the Presentation.  So, the Rector will present pizza to our youth group at 11:30.  Groundhog sausage topping is NOT an option, however.  All our youth in grades 7-12 are invited for fun, food and fellowship.
