             Time for Winter Annuals
                                    By Chris Winslow

With the weather now cooling off, and our freaky weather patterns
giving us plenty of rain, it is time to think about planting colorful annuals
to give our flower beds a fresh look.

These tough fall and winter annuals will bloom when the days are short
and cool. Many of them can even take a freeze in stride.

Snapdragons This is a versatile group with a range of colors and
heights. The flower has a dragon’s face that opens and closes when
squeezed…hence the name.  Snaps come in white, red, pink, yellow,
bronze, and every color in between. You can buy short, medium and
tall plants. Staggering or stair-stepping your planting can make a
dramatic show, and you might even find yourself on the shortlist for
a “Yard of the Month” award in the spring! Be patient. Snaps greatest
show will be late winter and early spring. An added plus: deer don’t care
for their flavor.  Now available:  4" pot - $1.50  Six packs $2.99

Pansies & Viola These also come in a world of colors, shapes and sizes.
Pansies stay short, under a foot, but their flower size can range from ½”
in the violas to 3 inches across in the majestics and the maxims. They can
take light freezes and even a little snow at times. You can find pansies
with solid colors, as well as varieties with blotches and faces. They love
a little blood meal and a sunny spot.
Now available:  4" pot - $1.50  Six packs $2.99

Flowering Cabbage and Kale
They look like cabbages as they grow
but come in an array of colors and leaf textures. Cabbage and kale carry
their colors through the winter months and bloom yellow in the spring
when the days begin to get long. Also, they provide plentiful nectar for
honey bees in the spring. Aphids are the pest to watch out for here. Control
them easily with a spray of soapy water.
Now available at the nursery: 4 sizes: $1.50 - $7.99
                      Happy Gardening Everyone!

Nursery owner Chris Winslow is on the mend! Photographer Julie Blake
snapped this picture of him back at work last week in one of the greenhouse.
Chris is grateful to all the nursery's friends for their sweet get-well cards and
thoughtful gestures. All of this is clearly helping with his recovery.
