Chicago dirty blues-rock quartet THE ADDIES bringing charismatic
performance to Double Door on Oct. 14th
RIYL: The Kooks; Arctic Monkeys; Band of Skulls
Dirty, blues-influenced rock has suddenly become an archetype for American music. The White Stripes and The Black Keys have taken the formula to massive heights, but neither seem to be having as unapologetic of a good time as Chicago's The Addies. Starting out just writing songs in their dorm rooms, plugged into crappy stereo speakers, this quartet has clearly honed their craft and are meant for a major following. Mixing the Keys' and Stripes' aesthetic with huge nods to The Kooks and Arctic Monkeys, The Addies are in a league of their own and coming up fast.
Having graced the stages of some of Chicago's more premier venues (The Metro, Subterranean, Beat Kitchen, Tonic Room), the band has worked with local production wiz Brian Zieske - whose resume includes The Academy Is..., Secret Colours, The Hush Sound and Pet Lions, among others - at the renowned Gallery of Carpet Recording Studio. More recently, the band has focused more exclusively on singles, engineered by the band's own Kevin Kiley, with Zieske helming the mixing.
The blistering "Won't Be Back," and the sleazy "Talker" radiate a youthful, yet schooled presence, relying not so much on the hip fashion sense of bands of their ilk, but on technique, honest-to-goodness songwriting chops and vocal prowess that hits the rafters. They'll take over Double Door next month with another outstanding live show. Details below:
