Beyond The Wall
Visit to Steve Russell Studios

Back in November, commercial photographer, Steve Russell visited BPS to give what proved to be a fascinating insight into the life of a commercial photographer. Steve threw out an invitation to BPS members to visit his studio in Stroud. So it was on a cold, foggy morning last Saturday that thirteen stalwart members made their way to Stroud and Steve's studios.

Steve, along with his colleague Tom, treated us to a fascinating insight into the world of commercial photography, focusing on photogrammetry (3-D photography) and photographing large scale objects such as cars and larger than life bronze sculptures.

All of this was accompanied by practical demonstrations, some interesting comments on their links to the bronze foundry next door to the studio where much of their 3-D work was translated into sculptures often for well-known artists such as Damien Hirst.

We finished off the morning with a visit to the adjoining Pangolin Gallery which exhibited some superb brass sculptures at often eyewatering prices!

I think it was fair to say that we all came away with a respect for what Steve had achieved and memories of a very enjoyable few hours.

BPS members gathered in Steve's Photogrammetry rig, which contains 160+ cameras - what a bunch of posers!

This year there are 30 clubs competing and it will be for both PDIs and prints.
