After the live debut in the early 90s, the reputation of bob hund's raucous performances and explosive, wayward songs quickly spread. Since then, the band has had a central place on the Nordic rock scene and after 32 years we have now reached the band's 13th album. Bob hund consists of Thomas Öberg, Johnny Essing, Conny Nimmersjö, Mats Hellquist, Jonas Jonasson and Christian Gabel. Six individuals who don't fit in but who fit together. They create music where reality is reflected in all its beautiful distortion and they do it together. This time they have also mixed in another creative force. For better or for worse, Per Sunding, from the pop band Eggstone, has produced - a genius on sound, a disaster on deadlines.
bob hund's very first records were recorded in the legendary Tambourine Studios in Malmö together with Per Sunding. Before the new album, bob hund once again stepped over the threshold of the old brick building.
The first time bob hund met Per was in 1993. Then they recorded half an hour of music in 27 minutes. By then, all the songs were deeply engraved in both muscle memory and bone marrow. 30 years later, each song was like a little puzzle they were trying to solve together, and this time half an hour of music could take 28 days to record.
“We were impossible at that time. The producer got a resounding NO to the humble suggestion of adding the tiniest little tambourine in a single chorus – now we've been begging on our bare knees for tambourines in all the choruses, but now it was the producer's turn to say NO.” says Thomas Öberg, the orchestra's vocalist. All pop music requires a flat NO every now and then. This unfortunately led to the songs taking forever to complete.
The songs on the record have taken detours and wandered around for quite a while before they finally got their perfect form. Some songs go back a long way, other seeds were sown very recently.
Some of the songs were already written before "BOBHUNDMUSIKAL", a musical that was performed at Helsingborg's Stadsteater in 2020 and which then developed into the performance called "Den overkliga sanningen om bob hund" that the band toured with during the spring. The songs were then given to Per Sunding, who had not seen or heard either the musical or the performance and his task was to make bob hund songs of these prima donnas melodies. To begin with, he threw everything away and boiled them down to skeletons before he, together with the band, began to rebuild them.
"These tunes have now changed so much that even their mother wouldn't recognize them today." says Thomas.
It has been a process that has taken an unreasonably long time. There is really no acceptable reason for this protracted process and if you want an answer you have to ask the band, but an answer to the question could actually be this Per Sunding, but it could also be about the guitar equilibrist John Essing who has been on duty and watched over all of the recording moments and quality-assured the product from the first note to the last, for a good two years. Despite that, he is totally surprised by the end result. "It hasn't been easy" says Jonny.
Some other songs only know their musical companions superficially and were added later. It's a patchwork. However, the process has borne the fruit that the songs are filled with little surprises, secrets and tidbits that you only discover little by little. It is a wonderful, exciting and unique realm to step into, even for a die-hard bob hund fan.
Included on the album is also their cover of The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog". In Swedish, in their version "Din hund". ”Raw, dignified and swinging" as Jonas Jonasson puts it. bob hund had the honor of performing the song for Iggy Pop when he was awarded the Polar Music Prize in Stockholm. For bob hund fans, it is well known that they have played it many times live over the years. But out of pure euphoria they now decided to also make a studio recording and spiced it up with a heavy dose of influences from Bo Diddley to prepared grand piano according to John Cage's special instructions. The sound sounds a bit like a mix of scrap music and the folk music style Gamelan from Bali.
As always, it will be up to bob hund's responsive audience to fill both lyrics and music with content, but the band imagines that the album has a red and white thread to follow both up and down, like on a polka dot.
