* * * The Co-op Will Be Closed on Easter Sunday, April 5th * * *

The Co-op will be closed on Easter Sunday, April 5. Last year we were open for regular business hours but we had very few customers, so this year staff will enjoy the day off.

We wish a happy Easter to those who celebrate and a lovely spring day to all!

Product Updates at the Co-op

In Grocery, we have some new lunch and beverage items. Stainless Steel lunch boxes from New Wave Enviro come with sturdy clips and are perfect for a homemade meal or to take to restaurants with you for your leftovers. Also from New Wave are Litter Free Lunch Bag kits, complete with four BPA-free containers, and a BPA-free bottle. The insulated bag is machine washable.  We also have New Wave stainless steel, double insulated bottles for both hot and cold beverages. From fit & fresh we have two more BPA-free containers that both come with removable non-toxic ice packs: a Lunch POD container for sandwiches and a Fruit & Salad POD with a dressing dispenser. From Preserve, we have 8 oz. food storage containers with a seal-tight, screw-top lid and sandwich containers in a 2-pack.  These are BPA-free, made from 100% recycled #5 plastic, and are 100% recyclable as well. New at the Co-op are Ball Mason Jars, in five sizes from 8 to 64 oz.  We also carry three different sealable drinking jar lids from EcoJarz. These will fit your canning jars so they are more easily used to take along your favorite beverages.

In Chill we have local favorite Farmgirl Creamery back in the store with Fromage Blanc cheese. Look for Farmgirl Creamery yogurts (Maple, Lemon, and Plain) beginning next week. We also have two new cream cheeses from California’s Meyenberg Goat Milk Products: plain and Garlic & Chive. Fans of Organic Pastures’ raw milk products will be happy to know that Lonnan is also bringing in some new items which will include Sea Salt Butter and some more cheese varieties. Look for these as they will be arriving soon.

Mark is bringing in produce from the Cal Poly Organic Farm starting with cilantro and green onions. Look for more items as the season progresses. Mark is also going to the SLO Farmers Market on select Saturdays in order to get the freshest local produce here in the store and save Co-op shoppers an extra trip.

Jessica has several product lines in Wellness to highlight. Local company Poppy Skincare products were developed by aesthetician Poppy Rhys, of Cayucos. Here at the Co-op we carry Youth Serum and Crème Lift. Both are 100% natural, organic, gluten-free, vegan and never tested on animals. From Collective Wellbeing we have sulfate-free Charcoal Body Wash, to cleanse and detoxify skin. We also have Hot Pore Warming Cleanser, a gentle scrub containing jojoba that actually warms up to open and cleanse pores. From Jarrow, we have some protein powders. Greek Yogurtein is a lacto-vegetarian protein powder which is also high in fiber. We also have Jarrow Grass Fed Whey Protein in three flavors: Vanilla, Chocolate, and Unsweetened. The cattle graze on pesticide-free pastures and are not treated with antibiotics or rBST. These protein powders are non-GMO and gluten-free.

In Herbs, Teresa has brought in Moringa Leaf, cut and sifted. The leaf of the Moringa is the most nutritious part of the tree and it has many vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. It can be used for teas or poultices. Here is a chemical analysis; note that the leaves contain arginine, an amino acid that can aggravate those who are prone to cold sores. It may not be safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, so please research Moringa -- and all supplements -- before using.

Meet Suzan Ehdaie, SNF’s Newest Board Member

At the last Board Meeting, Suzan Ehdaie was voted in as a Board Member at-large. We’re grateful to have another person on the Board who is committed to supporting local foods and the Co-op, in particular. Here is a bit about Suzan, in her own words:

Shopping regularly at a neighborhood grocery store is a sign of belonging to a community.  That is why I fell in love with the Co-Op.  I stumbled upon the Co-Op almost 7 years ago when my friendly neighbor recommended that I should check it out during our lively discussion about food and eating healthy.  Since then I have been a loyal customer in that I mainly buy my fruits and veggies twice or three times a week. The Co-Op provides access to local food and products that makes it convenient to shop and pursue a healthy and sustainable life style.  Buying local produce and products also helps spur economic growth.  I learned this concept when I worked for the City of Greenfield as an Economic Development Planner by starting a Farmers Market that brought the local farmers and residents together in one place to buy locally grown food.  As a new member of the Co-Op Board, I would like to take part in the efforts to improve the customer experience by introducing more local products and possibly online shopping. I feel fortunate to belong to a community that cherishes healthy-eating habits and supports the local grocery stores such as the Co-Op.  I look forward to making positive contributions to the Co-Op.

We hope you are able to come to the annual Membership Meeting on May 30th where you can meet Suzan and the other Board members.
