Wednesday 9 August

Next Wednesday we welcome Ashley Franklin ARPS, APAGB, BPE2* to BPS with his talk entitled Under Tuscan Sky. Many members will recognise Ashley as being the voice behind the NEMPF presentations that we have had in our programme for as long as I can remember. Ashley says the following about his talk:

Under a Tuscan Sky will take the audience to one of the most glorious landscapes on Earth: Val D'Orcia, a Mecca for photographers in the heart of Tuscany, where I have been running workshops since 2018.
My presentation is based on nine visits, seven in mid-May, a time of dawn mists swirling around the lush rolling hills where poppies bloom and cypress trees stand sentinel. I will also show the historic, scenic hill-top towns of the region in a talk bursting with inspirational images, including the best images taken by workshop photographers.

I am running my first autumn workshop this year – and there are two places available!

Here’s a few testimonials about the talk from various camera clubs… ‘So many breathtaking images, both uplifting and truly inspiring.  I have not uttered the word "wow" so much in one night. Tonight reminded me why I love photography'… 'This talk was a tour de force. The audio-visual sequences were beautifully put together and complemented by perfect music. A superbly-researched presentation with plenty of humour, too, from a supreme storyteller and a photographer who is clearly passionate about this wondrous part of Italy.'

DI Group
Last DIG meeting in July was a very fruitful evening and overran by fifteen minutes to see all that was submitted for presentation. The next DI group meeting is on Monday 14 August, in about a week's time. The meeting is open to all BPS members and you are welcome to share your images with fellow members. August is holiday month and perhaps time to sort out your images for the new season of club competitions and also get a second opinion at the DI meeting from your fellow members. You might just enjoy showing off your work and experiments in an informal atmosphere or ask questions on digital imaging.

When you are ready, please email your images for presentation to reach me by 6pm-ish  Sunday 13 August. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). To show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox if convenient, but I am not equipped to receive by direct transfers from Google or Apple Mac systems.

BPS Outing - Last Wednesday
A large number of members met up outside the Corn Exchange last Wednesday for the "annual BPS outing". Jay had organised a bit of a photographic scavenger hunt which kept members busy in between meeting at 7pm and finally (for many) adjourning to the Commercial Rooms for a spot of liquid refreshment. Jay had prepared a list of subjects to be photographed, but had underestimated the number of happy snappers who would turn up, so there was a bit of a shortage of the hunt instructions, so a copy is attached to this newsletter. If you want to upload/share your images, send them to Jay by WeTransfer, using the image titles as the file names - winners will be announced in the newsletter next week. I see that the first item is "A bicycle Being Ridden" was worth 5 points, perhaps a greater incentive would have been 25 points for a "bicycle being ridden legally!" - Ed

Paul MacLeod also dropped me a line to say that someone left a brolly at the Commercial Rooms, but that they shouldn't panic as he'll be taking it along to the clubrooms next Wednesday.

WCPF & AI
Following on from the item a couple of issues ago, detailing the PSA, FIAP & RPS documents concerning that ever-growing elephant in the room - AI. The WCPF have now joined the fray with their "INTERIM" guidance & advice on using AI. For ease of reference the updated text below is underlined. Note that they have taken the opportunity to clarify the use of some other techniques. It should be stressed that this only applies to images submitted to WCPF competitions and that BPS are yet to make any decisions, but rest assured you'll be the first to know when we make that jump.

General WCPF Competition Rules (Extract - Interim AI update August 2023)

Any photographer entering a WCPF competition must be a member of a club affiliated to the WCPF.

In all cases, the original image(s) must have been taken using a photographic process and be the sole copyright of the Entrant. All photographic processes and techniques are eligible (subject to any competition-specific rules that may apply) providing that the photographer owns the copyright to all elements of the picture. Any modification of the original image(s) must be made by the photographer or under their personal direction.

The use of clip-art, computer generated elements, downloaded textures, third-party decorative borders, or elements from any other photographer's images are not permitted. Images or image elements generated by any software tool are not permitted. This includes but is not restricted to backgrounds, textures, skies, props and other embellishments. Any creative, shaped or textured brushes must be created by the photographer.

Software tools that replace or remove an image element or extend an image such as content-aware fill, healing, patching or object removal are only permitted where the source for the inserted image data is wholly contained within the base image(s). It is the photographer’s responsibility to ensure that the tools they use do not draw image content from outside the photographer’s own work.

Guidance on the use of image creation and processing tools (sometimes labelled as “AI”)

Generative AI is not photographic and is therefore not permitted. Generative AI draws on data from outside the existing image and uses algorithms to create new content. AI-based generative fill, scene extension, patching or object removal is not permitted. Any adjustments must use tools that draw data only from within the existing image(s).

Technology that enhances an existing image without drawing on image data from outside that image (e.g., AI De-noise, AI Scaling, AI Sharpening) is acceptable. In general, the output image viewed at full-screen should look nearly identical to the original.
