Our speaker next week is Rose Atkinson ARPS from Wells, who will be showing us something a little different with her presentation "ICM - much more than just blurry images!"
Rose says the following about her talk:
Photography has always been a part of my life, ever since Daddy made me a toy camera for my third birthday. For the last 5 years I have been specialising in intentional camera movement and multiple exposures. I use my camera much like an artist uses a paintbrush, creating images which are more impressionist than representational and challenge our view of reality.
|
|
In 2022 I gained my ARPS in Visual Art with a panel of ICM images of Wells Cathedral. I love sharing my passion and I also run ICM PhotoWalks teaching people how to use ICM and make their own uniquely creative images.
The Art of Blur: Intentional Camera Movement
An introduction to the world of ICM. I will take you on a voyage of discovery starting in the 1950s, showing how photographers use ICM to capture the essence of a place or a moment in time, create images with a sense of ambiguity and mystery, and abstracts full of colour and light. I explain how to set up your camera and many different styles of ICM. My talk is illustrated with a selection of my ICM work including my ARPS print panel; also many inspiring examples from other ICM photographers.

Print Competition - Round 3
|
The closing date for Round 3 is Wednesday, January 31 and there is a box for your entries on the stage in Unit 13.
Club level entrants may submit a maximum of 3 prints in each round of the competition. Intermediate and Advanced entrants may submit a maximum of 2.
Prescribed Topic Challenge
For entrants at all levels, one of your 3 or 2 images may be submitted for the optional Prescribed topic challenge. These will be judged together, regardless of your level. This entry must be identified by ticking the box on the print label. Points gained for the Prescribed topic will also accrue to your score at the appropriate level.
A separate tally of Prescribed scores will be kept, with an award for the winner at the end of the season.
The optional Prescribed topic for this round is Lines.
You can download labels for your prints from the Members’ Portal on the website. To find the current labels for prints, either go to Competition Closing Dates and find the download links at the foot of the list or go to Competition Rules & Info > General Guide For Entrants and find the same links there.
It’s essential that you supply a digital copy of each print you enter. This should be the same size as for the PDI competitions – 1600 x 1200 – but there is no need to give any other information than your name and the title. You don’t need to add your membership number or level of entry. Please make sure that you upload the digital copies of your prints via this link: bristolphoto.org.uk/printsupload
The judge for this round will be Peter Orr ARPS from Newbury.

I have received the following from David Grierson:
I have recently moved from using Lightroom/photoshop to Capture One Pro and mobile. The main reason was I now shoot a lot of portraits and headshots for clients who really benefit from seeing tethered images on my Ipad during the shoot.
I know of a couple of other members in BPS who also use CAPTURE ONE but came up with the idea that we could create a CAPTURE ONE user group within BPS to be able to help each other if needed.
If you think you would benefit from forming a group please let me know by email to studio@piquestreet.com and I will set up a group. It won’t cost anyone to be a member

WCPF Inter-Club Championship - Still Time To Get Your Ticket!
|
This event will be showing the best images from the region, with as many prints as possible being on display at the venue. This is always a popular event, why not come along and support BPS and take the opportunity to catch up with friends and photographers from other clubs.
The Championship consists of two competitions: one for Digital Images (previously DPIC) and one for Prints (previously the Inter-Club Print). Each competition within the Championship is judged separately and has its own awards. The two competitions will be run as a combined event, judged on the same day using the same judges. The top clubs in each competition will go forward to represent WCPF in the PAGB national inter-club championships later in the year.

Distinctions Advisory Evening - Next Monday
|
The next Distinctions Advisory Workshop will take place at Unit 13 next Monday, 22 January, starting at 19:30. The advice will be given by Pete McCloskey FRPS, Andrew Marker FRPS and Ralph Snook ARPS.
This workshop is open to all who are thinking about an RPS (or other) distinction. Although aimed primarily at RPS distinctions, any advice will clearly be useful if you are thinking of applying for a WPF, IPF or PAGB Distinction.
It's worth noting that the PAGB have recently introduced two new awards, both for prints:
- Badge (BPAGB).
- Excellence (EPAGB).
You can read more about the various distinctions by following these links:
Future workshops will vary in content, including advice on PAGB Distinctions and digital submissions.
If you have any queries about this workshop, please get in touch with one of the organisers:
